Canyons Aquatic Club breaks Scottsdale’s 15-16 NAG record in 200 free relay

The boys of the Canyons Aquatic Club have broken a National Age Group record at the American Short Course Championships, going 1:22.88 to top the mark set by Ryan Hoffer and the Scottsdale Aquatic Club last year.

Canyons put up the time in a time trial Friday morning, chopping four tenths off the old NAG record, which was also set in a time trial last August.

On the relay were Kevin Dai (16), Johnny Ellery (16), Tanner Olson (15) and Brandon Young (16). The foursome broke the record with a much more balanced attack than the previous owners. Canyons had all four boys split between 20.5 and 20.8, while Scottsdale was led by a 19.8 split from Jack Blake in 2014.

Here’s a splits comparison of the old and new records:

Canyons 2015 Scottsdale 2014
Kevin Dai 20.58 Ryan Hoffer 20.31
Johnny Ellery 20.85 Jack Blake 19.81
Tanner Olson 20.63 Aaron Apel 22.02
Brandon Young 20.82 Kaleb Gould 21.06
1:22.88 1:23.20

That’s good but I have confidence Scottsdale will break it again. Ryan’s fastest fifty alone would have crushed the Canyons. Nonetheless good job to them.
