Canadian Club Coach Charged With Sexual Assault, Exploitation

Zack Hurd, a former swim coach with the Barrie Trojan Swim Club in Ontario, Canada has been charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

The 31-year-old Hurd was originally arrested in December and hit with the exploitation charge, according to CTV News Barrie. At the time, he was the assistant head coach and age group director for the Barrie Trojan Swim Club, per the CTV report. The club e-mailed members at the time of the arrest, announcing that Hurd was immediately suspended from all duties with the club. He is no longer listed on the club’s website, and the club told us this week that Hurd is no longer an employee with the club as of January 27, 2018.

Then, last month, the Ontario Provincial Police added three new charges following an investigation of Hurd. The charges now include sexual assault, per a follow-up CTV Barrie report.

Details about the allegations made against Hurd are currently thin. The original CTV report from December includes details from the swim club’s e-mail to parents. The club board said it understood that “the alleged incident took place outside of BTSC, and did not occur while Hurd was representing or performing his duties as a member and/or coach of the Barrie Trojan Swim Club,” per CTV.

The club has no other comment, citing a publication ban ordered by the court.
