Canadian Backstroker Hannah Burgess Verbally Commits to Oakland University

Hannah Burgess, who swims under Coach Sean Baker at the Oakville Aquatic Club in Oakville, Ontario, has given her verbal commitment to Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.

“I’ve always dreamed of swimming for an American university. I chose Oakland because it was the perfect fit for me, both in the classroom and in the pool. The team is so close and they are always pushing each other towards greater things. I am looking forward to growing with the team and ‘swimming fast’ (just like Assistant Coach Shawn Kornoelje says). I am also thrilled to work with Head Coach Pete Hovland who has 35+ years of experience. GOO GRIZZLIES!!!”

Burgess is a versatile swimmer who tends to specialize in back, fly, and distance free. At Canadian Nationals this past summer she finished 15th in the 200m fly, 17th in the 1500, and 20th in the 200 back. In addition, she placed in the top 8 in most of her events at 2014 Canadian Age Group Championships. Burgess’s top times include:

Event SCM LCM
100 back: 1:04.45 1:06.34
200 back: 2:15.07 2:20.94
200 fly: 2:18.71 2:23.63
400 free: 4:20.85 4:32.50
800 free: 9:00.98 9:23.67
1500 free: 17:22.12 17:52.05

Using SwimSwam’s Speedo Swim Time Converter, some of Burgess’s short course meters times turn into the following:
100y back: 58.06
200y back: 2:01.68
200y fly: 2:04.96

The 100 back would have made the B-final and both 200s would have been A-final contenders at the 2014 Horizon League Championships.

Hi Hannah this is your cousin Gracie. I swim for the Orillia Channel Cats. I hope to see you soon. I look up to you, and when I grow up, I hope to be half as good as a person as you are.
