Calvin Sweeps MIAA Titles, Including 11th Straight on Women’s Side

Calvin won a record 11th consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) women’s swimming and diving championship while the Knights also took the men’s championship for the second consecutive year Saturday night at the Holland Aquatic Center.

The Knights held off strong challenges from Hope and Kalamazoo in the women’s competition for its record-setting title. Calvin surpassed Hope’s previous mark of 10 consecutive women’s titles from 1980-89.

In the men’s competition, Calvin followed up its first-ever conference title from a year ago with a dominating performance, finishing 191 points ahead of second-place Kalamazoo.

In the post-meet award ceremonies, Calvin junior Johnson Cochran and Kalamazoo sophomore Tristyn Edsall were named Most Valuable Swimmers, while Kalamazoo senior Will Guedes and Hope junior Sarah Sheridan were named Most Valuable Divers.

Another MIAA record fell Saturday in the women’s 200 backstroke as Calvin’s Erika Waugh broke her own mark that she set last year, swimming a winning time of 2:02.62.
