California Distance Freestyler Rhys Empey Verbally Commits to Tufts

Rhys Empey, a 13-year veteran of the Coto Coyotes under head coach Todd Conrad, has verbally committed to Tufts University and plans to attend in the fall of 2017. Empey is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American from Tesoro High School in Las Flores, California who specializes in distance free.

Empey contributed to Tesoro’s third-place team finish at both 2015 and 2016 CIF-Southern Section Division I Championships. As a junior she was a B-finalist in the 500 free, finishing 14th with 5:01.51. Empey’s summer campaign culminated in an invitation to Stanford Futures, where she placed 28th in the 400 free and 11th in the 1500.

Her top short course times are:

  • 500 free – 4:59.11
  • 1000 free – 10:10.54
  • 1650 free – 17:14.39
  • 200 IM – 2:10.97
  • 400 IM – 4:36.75

Empey’s best 1000 free time would have won the 2016 NESCAC Championships, her 1650 would have placed 4th and she would have been an A finalist in both the 500 free and 400 IM.

“What seemed like a dream only a year ago has now become a reality and I am beyond excited to have verbally committed to Tufts University. I can’t wait to become a part of the Tufts’ swim family and the exciting and challenging academic environment at Tufts while only being a T ride from Boston! Go Jumbos!”
