RIVERSIDE  California Baptist University swim and dive teams rang in the new year with wins over Division III powerhouse Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday at the Lancer Aquatics Center. The women earned the victory 131-112, while the men posted a nearly identical winning total of 129-113.

The women claimed a relay win and seven individual victories against the Athenas. Naya Koc led the women’s side with a pair of individual wins while contributing to the 500 freestyle relay win. Guilia Decataldo, Martha AguilarMia MaspersMadison Liu, and Audrey Easter all won at least one event on the day.

The men took both relays on the day and added another six event wins against the Stags. Remi Fabiani and Evan Honer each claimed a pair of individual wins in the pool and boards, respectively, with Fabiani adding to the 500 free relay victory. Mark Kovacsics and Luke Altmann also won on their own, with Altmann helping claim wins in the relay races for the men.

CBU swim and dive must rest up quickly as they prepare for hosting duties again tomorrow. The Lancers will host Incarnate Word, USD (women only), and LMU (women only) on Saturday, which will act as the team’s Senior Day. Festivities will begin at 10:40 a.m., with the meet scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – All-American Augusta Lewis returned to the pool for the first time in the 2022-23 season and earned wins in both the 300-yard IM and the 300-yard breaststroke as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s swimming and diving team dropped a narrow 131-112 decision to Division I California Baptist at the Lancers’ annual distance meet on Friday afternoon at the Lancer Aquatics Center.

The annual meet features extended lengths for several races, including 300-yard butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, and IM events, as well as 500-yard medley and freestyle relays. The freestyle events included the standard yardages of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1650.

Lewis, who earned All-America honors in the 400 IM (second), 200 IM (third) and 200 breast (fourth) at the NCAA Division III Championships, competed for the first time in the 2022-23 season in the 300 IM on Friday and came in first place by over six seconds in 3:17.54, leading a 1-2-3 finish of Athenas with Mackenzie Mayfield in second (3:23.85) and Allyson Yao in third (3:27.92).

Lewis added a second win in the final individual event of the day, finishing the 300 breast in 3;38.29 to win by 1.7 seconds.

Annie Johnson won a close race in the 300 fly, edging out Gabriela Robles of California Baptist 3:22.27 to 3:22.49, a 10-point swing in the team standings. Jameson Mitchum took first in the 300 back with a time of 3:21.56, a victory margin of 2.35 seconds. The Athenas also opened the meet with a win in the 500 medley relay, with Mitchum, Lewis, Mayfield and Ally Rudolph finishing in 5:12.39.

In addition to the five race wins, Lexi Punishill was second in the 50 free in 25.55, Sun Young Byun was runner-up in the 200 free in 1:56.02, and Katy Shaw was second in the 1650 with a 17:51.51.

The meet came down to the final event, but California Baptist was able to take first place in the 500 freestyle relay and get the 11 points it needed to clinch with a 4:38.09.

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts Whittier in a SCIAC dual meet, with diving taking place at 10:30 a.m. and swimming getting underway at 12 noon.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Steven Tran took first place in both the 300-yard IM and the 300-yard breaststroke as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s swimming and diving team had a close 129-113 defeat to Division I California Baptist at the Lancers’ annual distance meet on Friday afternoon at the Lancer Aquatics Center.

The annual meet features extended lengths for several races, including 300-yard butterfly, breaststroke, backstroke, and IM events, and 500-yard medley and freestyle relays. The freestyle events included the standard yardages of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1650.

CMS had five individual wins on the day, including the two from Tran, who won the 300 IM in 3:00.58, followed by Frank Applebaum in 3:03.59. Tran later added a dominant win by over seven seconds in the 300-yard breaststroke, finishing in 3:16.62.

Applebaum, the defending Division III national champion in the 200 fly, turned around after finishing second to Tran in the IM and won the 300 fly in 2:59.54, a margin of almost five seconds. Lucas Lang earned a win of 7.42 seconds in the 500 free in 4:47.02, while Nick Tekieli earned first place in the 50 free for the Stags in a time of 21.10 followed by Dylan Krueger in second place with a 21.62.

In addition to the individual winners, Anderson Breazeale had a tight runner-up finish in the 300 back that came down to the final touch to the wall, as Remi Fabiani of California Baptist edged him out by eight-hundredths of a second (3:00.03 to 3:00.11). Lang was a close second in the 1650 free in 16:01.43, Theo Johnson was second in the 100 free in 48.25, and Cyrus Gaylord took second in the three-meter dive with 281.78 points.

The meet wasn’t decided until the last event (the 500 free relay), but the Lancers were able to take first and third to get the 14 points they needed to clinch, taking first place over the Stags team of Chris Ranlett, Tekieli, Johnson and Henrik Barck by just a quarter of a second (4:05.12 to 4:05.37).

CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it hosts Whittier in a SCIAC dual meet, with diving taking place at 10:30 a.m. and swimming getting underway at 12 noon.
