BYU Sweeps Air Force In Two-Day Dual

PROVO, Utah — BYU’s swim and dive teams competed against Air Force this weekend at the Richards Building pool, with the meet beginning on Friday evening and resuming Saturday morning.

Friday

The women’s team started off Friday night’s competition with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. A team of Brynn Sproul, Katie McBratney, Liza Slade and Halli Williams took first in the event with a time of 1:44.56.

McBratney continued to secure wins throughout the evening, taking first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:05.50 and also the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:03.65. Williams then won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.00, and Regan Geldmacher took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:01.65.

Rivers Johnson swam an exhibition in the 100-yard backstroke, recording the top score of that event with a 57.13. An exhibition swim from a team of Sproul, Emma Colvin, Williams and McBratney recorded the top time in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a 3:32.00.

The men’s team also started the evening with a win in the 200-yard medley relay. A team of Isaac Hajek, Brad Prolo, Tony Puertas and Roger Woods took first with a time of 1:30.54.

Tanner Nelson set two pool records on Friday night with his wins in the 500- and 200-yard freestyle events, recording times of 4:27.57 and 1:38.38 respectively.

Javier Nicolas Matta won the 200-yard IM, swimming a time of 1:51.66. Brigham Harrison won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.47. Prolo took first in the 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard breaststroke, recording times of 1:50.74 and 56.38 respectively.

Diego Camacho swam an exhibition in the 100-yard backstroke and recorded the top time for that event with a 50.32. An exhibition swim from a team of Matta, Woods, Harrison and Stirling earned the top time in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a 2:59.58.

The Cougars took first in both diving events on Friday night. Kennedy Cribbs won the women’s three-meter dive with a score of 305.85, while Mickey Strauss won the men’s one-meter dive with a score of 346.50.

Saturday

The Cougars kept their momentum on Saturday. The women’s team started off the morning with a win in the 400-yard medley relay, with Sproul, McBratney, Ashley Catchpole and Williams recording a time of 3:53.02.

McBratney then took first in the 400-yard IM with a 4:32.39, and Sproul took first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:04.61. Abi Furqueron won the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:23.97.

This weekend’s meet marked the first time the 1650-yard freestyle event was competed at the Richards Building Pool, and Geldmacher’s 17:42.11 win set a pool record for the event.

An exhibition swim from a relay team of Williams, Emma Colvin, Anna Despain-Jensen and Rachel Oyler earned the top time in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 1:37.16.

The men’s team also started off with a win in the 400-yard medley relay. BYU’s team of Camacho, Prolo, Matta and Stirling took first in the race with a time of 3:22.17.

Harrison took first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.32, and Camacho won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.20. Matta won the 200-yard breaststroke, swimming a 2:03.63.

Nelson won the 400-yard IM with a time of 3:59.54, and then set the men’s pool record in the 1650-yard freestyle with his 15:59.02 exhibition swim in the event.

An exhibition swim from a relay team of Harrison, Matta, Woods and Stirling earned the top time in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a 1:21.64.

BYU divers won both diving events again on Saturday. Cribbs took first in the women’s one-meter dive with a score of 302.25, while Strauss won the men’s three-meter dive with a 369.90.

The Cougars’ next meet will take place on Friday, Jan. 21 at the Richards Building Pool. BYU will face Colorado Mesa and Denver at 2 p.m. MST.

PROVO – The women’s swim and dive team came up short at Brigham Young as the Cougars outscored the Falcons, 191.00-155.00, in a two-day dual meet at Richards Building Pool. The Falcons saw victories in four events and 17 finishes inside the top-three.

The Falcons’ 400 freestyle relay team took the top spot as Sefilina MaileKara GavinRaquelle Roesch and Abby Turner clocked a 3:33.92 in the event. Air Force also saw victory in the 200 freestyle relay as Turner, Addie OrrisAlex Clark and Lia Campbell swam to first with a 1:37.67.

Turner, who helped two freestyle relay teams to victory, also won first in the 100 freestyle with a 53.02, and finished third in the 50 freestyle with a 24.40. The Falcons excelled in the 100 free as they claimed the top-three spots with Gavin finishing second (53.15) and Maile finishing third (53.47).

Freshman swimmer Alex Clark, who helped the 200 free relay team to a win, also claimed the victory in the 200 butterfly, registering a 2:07.56. She finished second in the 100 butterfly (58.13), behind teammate Shayla Markle who won the event with a 57.90.

Air Force’s Corinne Yorkman won first-place in the 100 backstroke as she clocked a 58.98. Markle finished in a close second (59.56), while teammate Anna Ashley finished third (1:00.30).

Falcon divers Gabby Peltier (269.63) and Grace Treanor (267.98) finished second and third in the three-meter dive, respectively. The repeated second and third place finishes in the one-meter dive with Peltier scoring a 253.95 and Treanor registering a 252.15.

“Our team had a tough meet on Friday night, we came back ready to race on Saturday morning and had a great meet,” head coach Colleen Murphy said. “We rose to the challenge on Saturday, the 1-2-3 finish in the 100 free really energized our team and our butterflyers were so good all weekend long, I am so proud of how this team turned their meet around and finished so well.”

Next up, women’s swimming returns home for a Mountain West tri-meet with Colorado State and New Mexico, Saturday (Jan. 22), at Cadet Natatorium. Action is slated to begin at 11 a.m.

PROVO – Men’s swimming and diving was outscored at Brigham Young, 197.00-136.00, in a two-day dual meet at BYU. The Falcons saw winners in five events with 18 finishes in the top-three.

Air Force’s 400 freestyle relay team took the top finish as Andrew LimpertJoseph MooreJacob Bulseco and Corey Shepard swam to a 3:03.89 finish. Individually, Limpert took the top spot in the 100 butterfly with a 49.56, and took second in the 200 butterfly clocking a 1:51.33.

Junior teammate Gabe Bartolomei led the Falcons in the 100 backstroke where he finished first (51.34) ahead of teammates Joseph Moore (52.33) and Gharret Brockman (54.42). Bartolomei also took second in the 200 backstroke with a 1:53.52.

Air Force diver Alex Kenyon took second in two diving events, scoring a 332.18 on the one-meter dive and a 291.45 on the three-meter dive.

Next up, the Falcons take a short break in action as they prepare for the Colorado Sprint Championships, January 29, hosted at the University of Denver.
