Bryant Sweeps Marist; Matthew Mays Gets Pool Record in 100 Back

Men’s Meet

SMITHFIELD, R.I.- The Bryant men’s swimming and diving squad were victorious on senior day, winning ten events en route to a 171-129 defeat of Marist. Matthew Mays won three individual events and a relay, highlighted by a new pool record in the 100 back. FuKang Wong and Leo Luna also won multiple times for the Bulldogs.

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Matthew Mays set a new pool record with a 50.58 in the 100 back. He also won the 200 back and IM, and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team.

  • The Bulldogs had a 1-2 finish in both backstroke events as Griffin Lajoie came second to Mays both times. Mays and Lajoie hold the NEC’s top two times in the 200 this season.

  • FuKang Wong won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke and was also on the 200 medley relay team. He and Calvin Groenewold took a 1-2 finish in both breast events.

  • Mays, Wong, Dom Scifo, and Eric Bebel kicked off the men’s meet with a 1:33.75 to win the 200 medley. The quartet holds the second best mark in the NEC this season at a 1:31.75.

  • Leo Luna won both distance events for the Bulldogs, taking the 100 free in 9:47.00 and the 500 in 4:45.48.

  • Conner Lofstrom edged out Marist’s Ahmed Sallam by 0.01 seconds to win the 50 free with a time of 21.65.

  • Ben Prouty, Drew Arnold, and Evan Clark gave Bryant a 1-2-3 result in the one meter dive. Prouty took the top spot with a 233.93 score.

The Bulldogs will now begin preparation for the NEC Championships, held February 22-26 at Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Women’s Meet

SMITHFIELD, R.I.- The Bryant women’s swimming and diving team rounded out the regular season with a win, defeating Marist 178-118 on senior day. The team won twelve events in total, led by three individual wins from Reagan Lord and two each from Laurel Carey and Sammi Grenon.

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Reagan Lord won four events in total, claiming individual wins in the 100 and 200 back and 200 IM. She was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team.

  • Lord and Stenhard combined for 1-2 finishes in both backstroke events. Lord holds the NEC’s top time in both, while Stenhard is in the top six in both.

  • Sammi Grenon swept the distance events for Bryant, winning the 1000 free in 10:46.76 and the 500 free in 5:19.23. The Bulldogs had a 1-2 in the 1000 with Natalia Kuipers coming second.

  • Laurel Carey won both the 50 and 100 free, heading a Bulldog 1-2 in both events. Alyvia Beaudion was second in the 50, while Erin Doruska was the runner-up in the 100 by just 0.01 seconds.

  • Beaudion picked up an individual win in the 100 breast with a time of 1:10.17, with Elin Svard finishing second for Bryant. Beaudion was also on both winning relay teams for the Bulldogs.

  • Charlee LeGallais won the 200 fly at 2:12.39.

  • Kyri Chambo won the three meter dive with a score of 238.88. She was also the runner-up in the one meter.

  • The Bulldogs swept both relay events. Lord, Beaudion, Stenhard, and Doruska kicked off the meet with a 1:48.32 in the 200 medley, while Carey, LeGallais, Beaudion, and Doruska ended with a 1:38.41 in the 200 free. Both relay teams are top two in the NEC so far this season, with the 200 medley team holding the top time.

The Bulldogs will now begin preparation for the NEC Championships, held February 22-26 at Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

Men’s Meet

SMITHFIELD, Rhode Island – Marist men’s swimming and diving was defeated by Bryant , 171-129, in a non-conference meet this past weekend. It was the Red Foxes first meet since December 4th after having their meet against Southern Connecticut State canceled in mid-January.

Highlights

  • Ethan McCormac finished first in the 200-yard freestyle secure nine points for the Red Foxes.
  • In event 12 Adam Kapusta claimed victory in the 200-yard butterfly. Pavel Makarchuk placed third in the same event. Makarchuk also placed first in the 100-yard butterfly.
  • McCormac and Ahmed Sallam finished first and second in the 100-yard freestyle.
  • Kapusta and James Conable finished first and second in the 500-yard freestyle.
  • On the men’s three-meter diving board, Tyler Wenzel took first place with a final score of 240.22.
  • In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Sallam, Devin White, Makarchuk, and McCormac took first place.

  •  Emma Butzler won the 200-yard freestyle finishing in 1:57.35 and picking up nine points for the Red Foxes.
  • Leigh-Anne Zanella placed second in the 200-yard butterfly. Sophia Swanson finished fourth.
  • Grace Reeves picked up another win on the diving board, finishing first in the 1-mtr. Madison Sweeney placed 4th in the same event along with Kyra Cavicchi who finished 5th.
  • Jessica Freund earned a win in the 200-yard breaststroke. Amanda Poor and Julianna Engel finished right behind Friend in second and third, respectively.
  • Sophia Swanson took first in the 100-yard butterly. Zanella finished second in the same event.
  • In the 3-mtr diving board, Sweeney took second and Reeves finished third.
