It was more domination for the Bruton girls and the Glenvar boys at the Virginia High School League 1&2 State Swimming and Diving Championships.
The Bruton girls’ team won its fifth straight state championship, accumulating more than double the point total of runner-up Radford.
Glenvar won its third straight boys’ championship, outlasting Poquoson by 68 points.
Girls’ Recap
Bruton was led by seniors Alyssa White and Peyton Cleary, who each won two individual events and were a part of a winning relay team.
Committed to Maine, White won the 200 free in a time of 1:54.63 and the 100 free in a personal best of 52.31.
Cleary, who is committed to George Mason, won the 50 free in 24.50 and the 100 back in a personal best of 58.85.
The two also swam on Bruton’s winning 200 free relay team.
The team of Cleary (24.84), Gianna Smith (25.02), Jade Bevans (25.26) and White (24.03) won in a time of 1:39.15, more than 10 seconds ahead of runner-up Radford.
The other multiple-event winner was Strasburg junior Emily Davis, who captured the 200 IM in 2:12.39 and the 100 fly in 58.63.
Other event winners were:
- The 200 medley relay was won by James River Buchanan’s team of Riley Persinger (29.70), Kimberlyn Van Aiken (33.95), Sarah Norman (29.44) and Lydia Jones (29.37) in 2:02.46.
- Bruton’s squad of Dori Veith (58.70), Ali Thompson (1:00.59), Bailey Walters (59.59) and Maddie Hubbard (57.35) won the 400 free relay in 3:56.23.
- Radford junior Jill Grimm won the diving event with 415.65 points.
- Maddie Hubbard, a Bruton senior and another George Mason commit, won the 500 free in 5:22.09.
- Poquoson sophomore Lilli Kawecki won the 100 breast in a personal best time of 1:07.32.

Boys’ Recap
Glenvar was paced by senior Landon Cairns, who won two individual events and was a part of two winning relay teams.
Cairns first won the 500 free in 5:02.79, and then he improved on a 2nd-place finish in the 100 breast last year by winning it this time in 1:01.94.
In the 200 medley relay, the team of Avery Thompson (28.77), Cairns (27.94), Aspen Thompson (24.79), and Brendan Miller (25.63) took 1st in a time of 1:47.13.
Cairns then swam anchor for Glenvar’s winning team in the 200 free relay.
The squad of Avery Thompson (25.13), Miller (25.54), Aspen Thompson (22.06) and Cairns (22.99) won in a time of 1:35.72.
Poquoson senior Tony DeVries and Galax sophomore Briar Sessions also won two events.
Committed to Pittsburgh-Johnstown, DeVries won the 50 free in a time of 21.66, an event he also won as a sophomore. He later won the 100 free in a personal best of 46.98.
Sessions won the 200 IM in 2:01.66, and then took the 100 fly, coming in with a personal best time of 53.41.
Other event winners were:
- Shepherd Parsons, a freshman from Virginia High, won the 200 free in a personal best 1:58.86.
- Giles freshman Caleb Lesley won the diving event with 295.70 points.
- Aspen Thompson, a sophomore for Glenvar, won the 100 back in a personal best 54.01.
- The 400 free relay was won by Poquoson’s team of Cainan Pay (55.74), Akito Leslie (1:00.75), Ericson Darnell (52.73) and DeVries (47.97) in a time of 3:37.19.
