The Bruins rallied from yesterday’s loss to the Arizona Wildcats with a 169-124 win over Arizona State University at home. Dominating swims from UCLA helped them pick up multiple event wins, as well as an NCAA B Cut and a few meet records to boot.
The Bruins’ A team picked up the first win of the meet in the 200 Medley Relay with a new ASU vs. UCLA meet record (1:42.0) by just two tenths of a second. The Sun Devils’ A team finished less than .5 seconds behind in 1:42.42 for second. Arizona State’s B team followed up for third place in 1:44.82. The 1000 was the start of a four-event winning streak for the Bruins.
Bruin junior Katy Campbell took the 1000 Free in 9:58.17, a commanding 11 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. ASU sophomore Anna Olasz was second (10:09.38) ahead of UCLA sophomore Hayden Walker (10:29.48).
UCLA’s Katy Campbell jumped right back in the pool after her win in the 1000 Free, and swam to her second win in the 200 Free (1:49.39). Sun Devil senior Juanita Barreto followed up for second (1:50.95) ahead of Bruin sophomore Madison White (1:51.46).
Bruin sophomore Linnea Mack finished ahead of a 2-3 Sun Devil charge with a 54.34 in the 100 Back. Her time was a new meet record, as well as an NCAA B cut. ASU senior Melanie Busch touched second in 57.07, ahead of teammate Ingibj Jonsdottir (57.58).
The Sun Devils fought back at the Bruins with a 1-2 sweep in the 100 Breast, completed by ASU freshmen Jorie Caneta (1:03.37) and Ivana Ninkovic (1:04.67). UCLA junior Allison Wine touched third in 1:05.13.
UCLA dealt a huge blow in the next event, as the Bruins completely swept the 200 Fly by taking the first through fourth positions and began exhibition swims. Bruin senior Noelle Tarazona touched first in 2:00.36, just four tenths of a second ahead of freshman teammate Katie Grover (2:00.77). UCLA juniors Katie Kinnear (2:01.20) and Arlyn Upshaw (2:04.35) took third and fourth, respectively.
Bruin sophomore Linnea Mack was another double event winner of the meet, taking her second win in the 50 Free (23.13) in another meet record. Arizona State’s Alysha Bush followed up for second (23.48) ahead of UCLA senior Monica Dornick (23.59).
UCLA’s Maria Polyakova swept both the springboard events for the Bruins, scoring 328.05 in the 3-meter and 308.40 in the 1-meter. ASU freshman Mara Aiacoboae took second in both events behind Polyakova, scoring 303.53 and 296.85, respectively. The Bruins would go on to win the rest of the individual events of the meet.
UCLA sophomore Monica Dornick took the 100 Free in 50.40, getting close to that NCAA B cut (49.99). ASU sophomore Alysha Bush (50.65) and junior teammate Maria Spadoni (51.21) completed a 2-3 sweep for the Sun Devils.
Bruin sophomore Madison White neared the NCAA B cut as well with her win in the 200 Back (2:00.02). Arizona State’s Juanita Barreto (2:03.04) and Jennifer Morgan (2:03.64) followed up for second and third.
Senior Jessica Khojasteh took home the win for the Bruins in 2:17.12, ahead of Arizona State teammates Jorie Caneta (2:18.13) and Tory Houston (2:19.99).
UCLA sophomore Michaela Merlihan touched first in the 500 Free (4:57.84) in a tight race ahead of ASU sophomore Anna Olasz (4:58.08). Olasz‘s teammate Kat Simonovic touched third in 5:00.58.
UCLA freshman Katie Grover took home an event win during her first collegiate season in the 100 Fly (55.42) ahead of Arizona State junior Maria Spadoni (56.43) and her ASU teammate, senior Lori Layne Kremer (57.39).
Bruin junior Arlyn Upshaw finished first in the 400 IM (4:23.42), over four seconds ahead of second-place ASU sophomore Cheyenne Degraff (4:27.61). ASU senior Tory Houston took third in 4:36.14.
With exhibition swims in full force, the Sun Devils A team brought home the win in the 400 Free Relay (3:23.72) getting within almost one second of the ASU vs. UCLA meet record (3:22.10).
