Bolles, Montverde Academy, Saint Andrews Sweep Florida 1A Regional Titles

A recap of all four Florida Class 1A region meets. The top two finishers in each event automatically qualified for this weekend’s state meet, along with the next best eight overall times among the four regions.

Region 1

Team winners: Girls — Bolles, 672.5; Boys — Bolles, 692.

Overview: There wasn’t much suspense from a team perspective, with Bolles predictably dominating again. The Bolles boys team will be trying for its 38th state title in a row this weekend, while the girls will go for their 35th in a row. Thi Rai of Bolles swam a personal best time of 54.63 to win the 100 breast, while Liam Carrington of Bolles won the 100 free in a personal best time of 44.16. The best non-Bolles swimmer of the meet was Blakely Hammel of Jacksonville Episcopal in the girls’ event. Hammel tied with Allison Kelly of Bolles for first in the 200 free (1:48.50) and won the 100 free in 50.17.

Region 2

Team winners: Girls — Montverde Academy, 362.5; Boys — Montverde Academy, 375.5.

Overview: Both the girls and boys squads for Montverde won easily and will head to the state meet looking to improve on top-five finishes at last year’s state meet. The girls team finished 5th, while the boys were 4th. It was the fourth straight regional title for the Montverde boys and the sixth in seven years for the girls. Trey Chesney of Jupiter Christian won the 200 IM and 100 fly, while Collin Reed of John Carroll won the 50 free and 100 free to lead the individual performances in the boys’ competition. As for the girls, Maria Fernanda Castro of Montverde won the 200 IM and 500 free, and Rachel Nussbaum of Benjamin won the 50 free and 100 free in personal best times.

Team winners: Girls — Out Of Door Academy, 218; Boys — Shorecrest Prep, 337.5.

Overview: It was a close contest in the girls’ competition, with just 12 points separating first-place Out Of Door Academy (218), second-place Tampa Prep (210) and third-place Keswick Christian (206). Zoe Gruber led the way for Out Of Door, winning the 200 IM and 100 breast.  Out Of Door will head to the state meet looking to improve on an 11th-place finish last year. In the boys’ competition, Shorecrest Prep had a more comfortable margin over runner-up Berkeley Prep (220). Shorecrest Prep finished eighth at last year’s state meet. Maddox Matyas led Shorecrest Prep, winning the 200 free and 500 free. The other individual standout was Lucas Casey of Community School of Naples, who won the 50 free and 100 free.

Team winners: Girls — Saint Andrews, 477; Boys — Saint Andrews, 432.

Overview: Both the Saint Andrews girls and boys teams were runner-up to Bolles at last year’s state meet, so it wasn’t surprising to see Saint Andrews easily win the regional in both genders.  The boys team for Saint Andrews was led by Jared Berke (won the 200 IM and 100 breast) and Conner Brinley (won the 100 back and 100 fly). The other individual standout was Virginia commit and NSU School junior Juan Vallmitjana, who won the 200 free and 500 free. In the girls’ competition, Saint Andrews was led by Cielo Moya, who won the 50 free and 100 fly.
