Derek Onken is a senior member of the University of Georgia swim team. Onken is an IM specialist and former Georgia state champion. He’s a Mathematics major who’s involved in the student-athlete experience at Georgia. Onken was nominated to the Student-Athlete Academic Committee and was also voted team captain. He had some leadership experience when he attended The Walker School – he was a two-time MVP and team captain there. On the academic side of things Onken has been named to the Academic Honor Roll, the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll and was also named an Honorable Mention Scholar All-American by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. Born June 1, 1993 to parents, Richard and Patricia, Onken was one of the top recruits out of the state of Georgia. Although he primarily swims IM and breaststroke, Onken is also competitive in the 200 and 500 freestyle.
University of Georgia
As a freshman Onken competed in the dual meet season and also swam in the exhibition events at the SEC Championships. He was named to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Honor Roll.
Onken did not compete at the SEC Championships, but he focused on the Georgia Last Chance Meet as his end-of-the-season competition.
As a junior Onken made the scoring team at the SEC Championships. He finished 30th in the 200 IM, earned a second swim and finished 14th in the 400 IM, and he also finished 28th in the 200 breaststroke.
Onken is in his final season as a Georgia Bulldog. At the 2015 SEC Championships Onken came in 31st in the 200 IM, 20th in the 400 IM and 28th in the mile.
Onken was the high point-winner at the 2010 Georgia state championship meet, and a year later he was the 2011 Class 5-A Georgia state champion in the 200 IM. He competed for the Marietta Marlins.
