Backstroker Jack Christian (2021) Makes Verbal Commitment to Duke

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

High school junior Jack Christian has announced his verbal commitment to Duke University’s class of 2025. A junior at Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, Christian swims year-round for Upper Main Line YMCA and is a Summer Juniors qualifier in the 100/200 backstroke.

Christian wrapped up his junior year high school season in February at Eastern Interscholastic Swimming Championships. Episcopal finished 4th in the boys’ standings and Christian contributed to the winning 200 medley relay (23.39 leadoff backstroke) and second-place 400 free relay (45.92 anchor). Individually, he came in 4th in the 200 free (1:39.75) and 5th in the 100 back (49.79). The meet produced his PBs in the 50 back, 100 back, and 200 free. Christian swims year-round for Upper Main Line YMCA. In March, he swam at the Pennsylvania YMCA East Districts, competing in the 200 back (1st place), 400 IM (3rd place), and 100 breast (10th place) and earning new PBs in the 200 back and 100 breast. Last summer he had an outstanding meet at 2019 YMCA Long Course National Championships. He placed 4th in the 50m back (27.30), 3rd in the 100 back (57.95), and 9th in the 200 back (2:06.85). He finished the meet with new times in the 50/100/200/400 free and 50/100/200 back.

Top SCY times:

  • 50 back – 23.39
  • 100 back – 49.76
  • 200 back – 1:49.90
  • 200 free – 1:39.75
  • 100 free – 47.22
  • 50 free – 22.29
  • 200 IM – 1:55.14
  • 400 IM – 4:06.64

Duke finished 10th of 12 teams at 2020 ACC Men’s Championships. The Blue Devils’ only point scorer in the backstroke events was junior Nathaniel Hartley who came in 18th in the 100 (47.16). It took 47.93/1:46.33 to get a second swim in the 100/200 back at conference this year. Christian’s best times would have ranked him among Duke’s top three backstrokers this season.

Great kid. High ceiling. It’s a shame he didn’t get to swim rested at Y-Nats this year.
