Australian Olympic Gold Medalist Chelsea Hodges Will Miss World Champs After Hip Surgery

2023 AUSTRALIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Chelsea Hodges will miss the 2023 Australian Championships, Australian Trials, and World Championships this summer after undergoing surgery to repair torn cartilage in her right hip.

The 21-year-old Olympic gold medalist wrote on Instagram that she had been rehabbing a stress fracture in her lower back since January, but when she tried to return to the pool, she felt a familiar hip pain. Seven years ago, Hodges had the same major surgery on her left hip.

“This year hasn’t planned out how I expected but I’ll be coming back stronger than ever,” Hodges said.

Hodges faces a four-month recovery period before she can return to training breaststroke again.

Last year, Hodges broke the Australian record in the 50 breast at Australian Trials with a 30.15 before lowering that mark to 30.05 at the Commonwealth Games, where she took bronze. She went on to help Australia’s 200 medley relay team break the world record (1:43.35) at the Short Course World Championships last December. At the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, she helped Australia’s 400 medley relay team break an Olympic record (3:51.60) en route to the gold medal.
