On the final day of the 2026 Australian Open Championships, 17-year-old Sienna Toohey set a new Australian Age Record in the 50 breaststroke, touching in 30.39 to earn the gold medal.
WOMEN’S 50 BREAST – FINAL
- Australian Record – 30.05, Chelsea Hodges, 2022
- Oceanian Record – 30.05, Chelsea Hodges (AUS), 2022
GOLD – Sienna Toohey, 30.39
SILVER – Mia O’Leary, 30.75
BRONZE – Lily Koch, 31.25
Toohey dropped almost two tenths from her personal best 30.58, which she swam at the 2025 World Championships, pushing closer towards the 30-second mark.
She took just over five tenths off Leiston Pickett‘s 2009 record time of 30.90. She also came in under Pickett’s 18-year-old record time of 30.57, making her the fastest junior swimmer in Australian history in the event.
Toohey will now hold the 50 breaststroke record for 14, 15, 16, and 17-year-olds with her being a near lock to take down the 18-year-old record next year.
She is also getting closer to the Australian record of 30.05 set by Chelsea Hodges in July of 2022 at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Toohey added this win to her 100 breaststroke gold of 1:06.69 and her 200 breast silver of 2:26.43.
She will also move up to 5th in the world this season, coming in just seven hundredths behind Japan’s Satomi Suzuki, who swam 30.32 at the Japan Swim in March.

wohoo, exciting to see developments outside of women’s freestyle
She is getting ready for LA 2028
Not to over react but if this translates to her 100 the AUS medley could be quite good come 2028
It maaaaybe puts 1:05-high in play.
With Gretchen gretchening all over the place we need a 1:04 100 brst to have a chance. So still long way to go. But also awesome to see progress forward still.
And/or a 55 high 100 flyer…
alex perkins seems like shes heading toward that
Yeah but Gretchen did go 54.9 last year on the medley relay and could go even faster and probably have more than a second advantage on the fly leg in the future.
shes already a 106 mid from a flat start. it feels pretty reasonable to assume shell at least be in the 106 low range this year — and 105 low/mid range in 2 years.
ive been saying for a while that the us women could be in danger if/when kd retires. the breaststroke depth in the us womens side is pretty thin atm. but there are a couple promising juniors who could pop in 2 years.
In McKenzie Siroky we trust
Yeah but we also could see some unknown name from US team in the
future swimming a good breastroke swimming 1:06 low to 1:05 high and Gretchen has a potential to go 54 mid in the relay
I guess you could say the same thing with McKeown retiring around the same time when Douglass retire and Aus probably gonna need another back to go 57
Well done Sienna. Come back and post here again.
She’s probably been advised to not interact with the peanut gallery over at SS.
Yes sometimes I advise myself to do the same lmao
Go little Sienna! She’s not really having “age grouper” big drops anymore but steadily making progress in all three breaststrokes. Hopefully she’ll be in fine form for LA and will be perfect age for Brissie!
I read toohey travels to Canberra to train for like 4 days a week.
Is that with Rollason?
yes
