New Haven, Conn. (February 8) — After four days of intense competition, the Assumption College swimming and diving team earned its second-straight Northeast-10 Championship on Sunday with a lofty total of 931 points. Freshman Niamh Morgan (Bettystown, Ireland / Sacred Heart School) came away with the Swimmer of the Meet honor for her impressive performance that included three individual gold medals on the weekend.

In addition to breaking NE-10 records on the day, Assumption also shattered four Greyhound program records on the final day of the 2015 championships.
The Hounds opened up their fourth day of finals competition with a victory in the 1650 freestyle by sophomore Rachel Lanam (Sebastian, Fla. / Sebastian River) who touched the wall in 17:39.34 for 20 points for Assumption. Lanam also won the event last season as a freshman with her now broken Assumption program record of 17:44.37, shaving five seconds off of her previous best time.
Next up for the Hounds was the 200 backstroke in which Morgan claimed her third and final gold medal of the competition. The freshman clocked an Assumption record-breaking time of 2:03.91 for the win and was followed by freshman Aerin Toskas (Douglaston, N.Y. / Archbishop Molloy) in fifth (2:10.89) and junior Janelle McDonald (Middleboro, Mass. / Middleboro), who placed sixth in 2:12.24. Morgan shatters her own program record of 2:06.43, which she set in December.
The Hounds took three-straight silver medals in the next events including the 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke and the 200 butterfly before earning a close victory in the 400 freestyle relay to close the competition.
In the 100 freestyle, freshman Carylyn Waite (Tampa, Fla. / Tampa Prep) was edged by Southern Connecticut’s Katie Crochet for the win. Both swimmers bested the previous NE-10 record of 52.38 with their times, Waite clocked in at 52.13, just after Crochet’s 51.89. Four Hounds competed in the A final of the event, however, to add points for Assumption. Waite was joined on the podium by senior Katherine Medeiros (Mattapoisett, Mass. / Bishop Stang) who took the bronze with her time of 53.57. Waite’s time was also fast enough to break her own Assumption program record of 52.50, which she set in December.
Also earning points for the Hounds in the event were sophomores Allie Wuerfl (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) and Tricia Lee (Norwood, Mass. / Norwood) who finished sixth (54.10) and eighth (55.03), respectively.
Two more Greyhounds podiumed in the 200 breaststroke. Sophomore Rachel Gagnon (Tolland, Conn. / Tolland), who helped claim two relay victories and an individual gold in the first three days of competition, earned the silver with her time of 2:27.11 for 17 team points. She was followed closely by senior Elise Prayson (Dayton, Ohio / Archbishop Alter) who clocked a time of 2:27.27 in third.
In the final women’s individual event of the competition, Lanam displayed another impressive performance, placing second overall in the 200 butterfly with her time of 2:19.99.
To close competition, Assumption won the tightly-contested 400 freestyle relay event, breaking an NE-10 and Assumption program record in the process. The squad, which consisted of Prayson, Waite, Mederios and junior Victoria Weber (Augusta, Maine / Cony), swam a record-breaking time of 3:32.04, besting the previous NE-10 record of 3:35.28 set in 2007 by over three seconds. The Assumption record was also 3:35.28, set in February 2014.
As the 400 freestyle relay event started, the Hounds found themselves behind early in the first leg however, in an entertaining event, Waite leapt into the pool for the second leg and overcame the deficit, roaring back to take the lead. The Hounds never lost the lead en route to the eventual victory.
The 400 freestyle relay was the final of the competition and marked the 10th relay win for the Hounds throughout the NE-10 Championships. Assumption claimed first in all 10 relay events in both the A and B finals on the weekend.
The Hounds finished out the competition with 931 total points for a 339-point victory. Bentley took second with 592 points, followed by Southern Connecticut (581), Saint Rose (557) and Pace (406). Complete results for the 2015 Northeast-10 Conference Championships are listed below:
