Antwerp on World Record Alert After Adam Peaty Goes Sub-27 in Prelims

At least one World Record is on high alert after Saturday’s prelims at the 2015 Flanders Speedo Cup in Antwerp, Belgium.

The two day meet has completed one session so far, and already Britain’s Adam Peaty has swum a 26.95 to break the Meet Record by six-tenths of a second.

He’s got an incredible field of swimmers behind him, but was already a second clear in prelims. That time is three-tenths away from his own World Record of 26.62 done over the summer at the European Championships.

The list of swimmers who will be chasing him include Fabio Scozzoli of Italy (28.04), Craig Benson of Britain (28.32), Andrew Willis of Britain (28.36), and Danie Gyurta of Hungary (28.49). Peaty broke the old World Record in a semi-final swim, so there’s no guarantee that he’ll be faster in finals, especially given that this will be his second swim of the evening, but we’ll be keeping one eye on the results.

Peaty is also the top seed in the 200 breaststroke in 2:14.85, with Andrew Willis (2:14.92) and Daniel Gyurta (2:17.07) behind him. Both Gyurta and Willis are, generally speaking, better 200 breastsrokers than Peaty, as is Michael Jamieson (the 5th seed – 2:17.19), but nobody put forth a lot of effort in that preliminary race.

While most of the elites stuck to a light 2-3 swims in prelims, it will come as no surprise that Hungarian Katinka Hosszu put forth an impressive 8 prelims swims. Among the best were a 55.31 in the 100 free, a 4:37.9 in the 400 IM, and a 2:12.17 in the 200 fly – all top seeds.

Saturday’s prelims results available here.

Danas Rapsys was a 200 Back finalist in Berlin and European Junior Champion in 2013, he was 1.57 in 2014. His 200 Free is new to me though, I knew he was good freestyler but that’s a big drop from the 1.49s.

Great from the British breaststroke girls – Young Katie Matts (b.1998) dropped over a second down to 1.08.5 too, just behind O’Connor.

British swimmers look pretty well rested for that meet. They probably want to see where they are after a big training. Fast swimming overall.
Thanks for the news about Rapsys.
And yes very good performances from the British breaststroke girls. The young Matts in 1.08 behind Taylor and SMOC (Siobhan-Marie O’Connor). You know how to teach breaststroke in GB! If you could give a few secrets to our French breaststroke girls…. 🙂

The Brits are not at all rested. They have just flown to Belgium from Qatar in the last few days where, according to Twitter, they were going through a gruelling training camp and staying in a state of the art ‘altitude hotel’.

CWH, O’Connor, Taylor, Jamieson, Willis, Carlin, Peaty, Grainger, Willmott, Miley, Milne, Lelliott, Jervis, Pavoni, Quigley, Barrett, Tancock.. all way off best times off the top of my head, Very Impressive still.

You’re right. It was excessive from my part. The 3.45 impressed me a lot.
Anyway, no swimmer is ever rested.
How I could forget that? 🙂
They didn’t swim best times but that’s very fast swimming for January.
