Anika Apostalon is Mountain West Swimmer of Week after double-dual wins

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. San Diego State sophomore Anika Apostalon has been named Mountain West Swimmer of the Week, while Nevada junior Krysta Palmer has earned MW Women’s Diver of the Week honors for competition completed through Sunday, January 11. It is the third MW weekly honor for Apostalon this season and the sixth of her career. For Palmer, it is also her third weekly accolade of the season and third of her career.

 

WOMEN’S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK

ANIKA APOSTALON, SAN DIEGO STATE

Sophomore, Albuquerque, N.M. / Albuquerque Academy

  • Aztecs were 2-0 in a double-dual home meet last week against Nevada (132-112) and Rice (140-104).
  • Recorded two individual event wins and two relay victories.
  • Won the 100-yard freestyle (49.74) with an NCAA ‘B’-cut qualifying mark. The time was also an Aztec Aquaplex record time.
  • Placed first in the 100-yard backstroke as well with a time of 55.92, second-fastest time in the history of the pool.
  • Contributed to the 200-yard medley relay time of 1:43.48 for the win and the second-fastest time in pool history.
  • Won the 400-yard freestyle relay with the fourth-best time in Aztec Aquaplex history at 3:27.16.

 

WOMEN’S DIVER OF THE WEEK

KRYSTA PALMER, NEVADA

Junior, Carson City, Nev. / Western Nevada College

  • Posted NCAA-qualifying marks in two events at the Hawai‘i Diving Invitational.
  • Set a Mountain West record in the platform event with a score of 328.00 (old record was 303.20 set by Fresno State’s Hannah Prigge in 2014) for the victory. Score was 70 points ahead of second-place finisher.
  • Won the 1-meter springboard with a score of 317.65, 30 points better than the next competitor.
