The 2026 Scottish National Open Swimming Championships kicked off in Edinburgh tonight, the site of this year’s Commonwealth Games.
British national record holder and Olympian Angharad Evans wasted no time making her presence known, with the 23-year-old University of Stirling ace throwing down a monster effort of 1:04.98 to take the women’s 100m breaststroke.
After notching a super solid morning swim of 1:06.21 in the heats to register the sole sub-1:10 time of the pack, Evans ripped the 1:04.98 to grab the gold, once again as the only swimmer to clear the 1:10 barrier.
Evans opened in a blistering 30.82 and brought it home in 34.16 to register the 2nd-best time of her career and just her 2nd time ever under the 1:05 barrier.
Evans’ lifetime best and British national record remains at the 1:04.96 notched at the Aquatics GB Championships this past April to qualify the dynamo for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and European Championships. That means her result this evening fell just .02 outside of that history-making feat.
The next-closest swimmer this evening was Edinburgh’s Charlotte Hardy, who touched in 1:10.16, with Emily McGhee rounding out the podium in 1:10.62.
The aforementioned national record set by Evans earlier this year makes her the #1 performer in the world right now and the only swimmer to hit a time in the 1:04 zone this season. That bodes very well for the Stirling star’s potential at both the Commonwealth Games and the European Championships.

oh shes the british record holder, i was like when tf has Britain had another good female breaststroker ever
Molly Renshaw was no scrub lol
She has been this good for a while now, just has been choking at international championships.
She was like top 3 in the world in 100 breast last season, but didnt make it past prelims at worlds
her 200 breast season best wouldve comfortably placed 3rd by multiple seconds, but she went PB +4 in the final to miss medals
She has really impressive times but currently just a single European SCM medal to her name.
Hopefully this changes with CGs as she is consistently rapid when swimming in GBR and she posted an impressive 1:05.3 in season swim in Paris in March, just doing that again in August would be a pretty high chance of… Read more »
