The 2026 Scottish National Open Swimming Championships kicked off today in Edinburgh as a prelude to this summer’s Commonwealth Games, headed to the same city next month.
Olympic multi-medalist Duncan Scott wasted no time making his presence known at this practice opportunity, with the University of Stirling star busting out gold medal-worthy swims in the men’s 200m IM and 200m fly.
In the former event, 29-year-old Scott scorched a winning time of 1:56.69 to get to the wall over three seconds ahead of the field.
Securing silver was 2020 Olympic Games champion in the 200m free, Tom Dean, who clocked 1:59.73, with Evan Jones rounding out the podium in 2:00.22.
As for Scott, his outing here fell just shy of the season-best 1:56.08 he notched at April’s Aquatics GB Championships to rank 4th in the world on his way to qualifing for the Commonwealth Games and European Championships. Assuming he is untapered, Scott’s result here should put would-be challengers on notice for Glasgow just a month from now.
But versatile Scott wasn’t one to rest on his laurels this evening, doubling up with the men’s 200m fly in which he found success with a solid result of 1:56.54.
Splitting 26.13/29.37 (55.53)/30.17/30.84, Scott demolished the field, with the next-closest swimmer represented by Manchester Performance Centre’s ,Ed Mildred who turned in a time of 1:59.97. Calum Rose of Edinburgh bagged the bronze in 2:02.04.
Scott’s time of 1:54.97 from the aforementioned Aquatics GB Championships already rendered him ranked 10th in the world on the season and a legitimate medal contender for this year’s Commies and European Championships.
Olympic champion Matt Richards led the men’s 100m free, although it was a very subdued final this evening.
23-year-old Richards posted an outing of 49.02 to top the podium, with fellow Olympic medalists James Guy and Alex Cohoon earning the minor medals.
The former hit 49.40 for silver while the latter clocked 49.57 for the bronze.
Entering this competition, Richards already ranked 7th in the world on the season, courtesy of the 47.53 he busted out at the Aquatics GB Championships.
World champion Freya Colbert proved too quick to catch in the women’s 100m free, delivering an outing of 54.38 for the victory.
22-year-old Colbert opened in 26.63 and closed in 27.75 to notch the only time of the field under the 55-second threshold.
Stirling’s Freya Anderson hit 55.00 for silver, as Manchester’s Leah Schlosshan also landed on the podium in 55.08, good enough for bronze.
British women are in desperate need of a more robust arsenal of sprinters, as the nation currently falls well behind powerhouses of the United States, Australia, and China.
Additional Notes
- With world record holder and multi-Olympic champion Adam Peaty competing at the Sette Colli Trophy in Italy, Greg Butler of Loughborough paved the way in the men’s 100m breast final. The 26-year-old notched 1:00.71 for the decisive victory, with Joshua Mitchell settling for silver in 1:01.33 and Rafe Dobson bagging the bronze in 1:03.23.
- The women’s 50m back saw Manchester’s Lauren Cox getting it done for gold by over a second, posting a solid swim of 28.02. Perth City’s Scarlett Ferris settled for silver well behind in 29.13, with Glasgow’s Millie Mainwaring earning a 3rd-place finish in 29.55 tonight.

Really impressive from Dunks, and much better from Tom Dean, 2s faster than he went at AP last month
Yeah extremely impressive, Duncan’s fastest ever in-season swim and faster than what he went to take Gold at 2022 Commies.
Looks like he’s in form to potentially break his NR in Glasgow as he’s always a chunk faster when tapered. Would LOVE to see him finally go sub-1:55 in front of his home crowd.
