Last night, ASU grad student Chaney made the decision to scratch his individual 100 freestyle in favor of the 200 backstroke. This was a major lineup change for him, as during his four years at Florida, he always swam the 100 free instead on the final day.

Before this season, Chaney had not swum the event since 2022, but in November, he raced the event for the first time in three years, swimming 1:39.59 in a dual meet vs USC to drop six seconds from the 1:45.74 he swam in November 2022.

In prelims, Chaney swam 1:41.82 to qualify 2nd overall behind Arizona’s Alex Desangles.

In the event final, Chaney got out fast, splitting 22.69 on the opening 50 to be the only sub-23 swimmer to start the race. He only built the lead from there, splitting the fastest time on all four 50s. He was 47.82 at the 100 mark and 50.51 on his 2nd 100 to pick up the win, taking three tenths off Ryan Harty‘s 2019 meet record time of 1:38.61.

This swim marked Chaney’s 2nd event win of the meet after he picked up the title in the men’s 100 backstroke earlier in the meet, swimming a personal best and Big 12 record time of 43.93 leading off the 400 medley relay and 44.13 to win the event final.
