The hits kept on coming into the final day of action at the 101st Japan Swim, the competition at which the nation’s swimmers were vying for Pan Pacific Championships and Asian Games qualification.
We’ve already seen multiple World Junior Records and Japanese national records go down through the first three days of the meet and tonight was no different.
The men’s 400m IM brought some major heat, with reigning Olympic silver medalist Tomoyuki Matsushita hitting a new lifetime best while his 17-year-old counterpart Yumeki Kojima established a new WJR.
20-year-old Matsushita unleashed a monster result of 4:06.93 to grab the gold, further establishing himself as one of the world’s premier contenders in this event.
His time demolished the 4:08.62 he put up in Paris to claim runner-up status behind French Olympic champion Leon Marchand as well as the 4:08.32 notched behind the Frenchman once again at last year’s World Championships.
It also overtook the lifetime best of 4:07.21 he put on the books last September at the Japan Student Swimming Championships.
Matsushita’s outing here thus represents his first-ever foray under the 4:07 barrier, becoming the 9th-fastest performer in history. He now usurps American Olympic medalist Carson Foster to rank #1 in the world this season.

About two seconds behind Matsushita this evening was 17-year-old Yumeki Kojima, the teen who already nailed a new World Junior Record last night in the men’s 200m IM.
Kojima’s performance crushed his previous best-ever and WJR of 4:09.38 registered as a 16-year-old last July at the 72nd Tokai High School Athletic Meet.

Split Comparison:

Matsushita is now Japan’s 3rd-best-ever performer and Kojima remains Japan’s 5th-fastest men’s 400m IM performer in history, again at just 17 years of age.

he is gonna bring down that wjr by so much
I know Matsushita has been working hard to get under 4:07. He said he was unhappy with his time at Worlds. Felt like he should have been closer to Marchand. Good to see him pushing himself to improve. Nice to see some fast times in this event from the Japanese swimmers.
Insane that you can swim 4:08 and not be able to make it through qualification
Crazy that a 4:06.9 barely squeezes into the Top 10 Performers list
Asahi Nishikawa already swam faster. His PB is 4:07.67 on November 29th, 2025 in Tokyo. I don’t remember the name of the meeting but the result was given by SwimSwam.

why does Matsushita only have a 4:08.6 on the top domestic performers?
