Day 1
For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best in heats. During prelims, swimmers qualify for one of two finals: the top 8 finishers make the A final, while places 9 through 16 the B final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers and divers in the A finals, “Down” to B finalists.
Women’s Meet
NYU had a huge first morning in Indianapolis, outscoring the psych sheet by 36 points by landing 6 swimmers in ‘A’ finals and 2 in ‘B’ finals. This gives the Violets a big advantage over Emory, who came into the meet with a 47-point lead, pre-diving.
Kenyon gained 22 points over their seedings. The Owls put at least 1 swimmer in every ‘A’ final, with a total of 5 “up” and 2 “down.”
Emory finished about as expected, earning 4 ‘A’ and 2 ‘B’ final slots. Denison, the 4th team with a shot at the national title, had 3 ‘A’ and 2 ‘B’ finalists.
Other “overperformers” included Kean (+21), Carnegie Mellon (+17), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (+13), Johns Hopkins (+10), and Swarthmore (+10).
MIT (-32) and Hope (-23) had a few misses vis-à-vis their seedings.

Men’s Meet
Denison and Emory started the meet with big performances on Day 1, earning 6 ‘A’ final spots apiece. Chicago and Kenyon will have 4 ‘A’ and 2 ‘B’ finalists, putting pressure on the Big Red and the Eagles. Emory (+39), Denison (+18), and Kenyon (+16) all overperformed relative to their psych sheet seedings. Rhodes picked up 20 extra points in prelims of the relay, while UC Santa Cruz improved their seedings by 10.5 points.
Williams (-34.5), Carnegie Mellon (-27), NYU (-13.5), and Connecticut (-13.5) had a few missed opportunities.
