The Monacan girls continued their recent dynasty, while the Lafayette boys claimed a title at a different state meet at the Virginia High School League Class 4 Swimming and Diving Championships.
Monacan won its fifth straight championship in the girls’ event, beating out runner-up Blacksburg by 14 points.
After finishing as the runner-up the last two years in Class 3, Lafayette moved to Class 4 and won the title, finishing 11 points ahead of Blacksburg.
Girls’ Recap
As expected, Monacan was led by senior Emerson Callis, who has committed to NC State.
At last year’s state meet, Callis won the 100 back and 100 fly, but didn’t swim either of those events this year.
Instead, Callis swam in the 50 free and 100 breast, winning both. She clocked a time of 23.14 to claim the 50 free, and swam a personal best 1:02.92 to win the 100 breast.
Callis was also a part of Monacan’s winning team in the 400 relay, splitting 48.62 on the second leg to help Monacan win in 3:28.47. Other team members were Natalie Horne (53.67), Campbell Diggs (53.08) and Parker Smithson (53.10).
Jamestown won the other two relays.
In the 200 medley relay, the team of Lilly Younica (26.77), Brooke Quinn (29.18), Campbell Daniel (24.87) and Finley Dameron (23.88) won in a time of 1:44.70, coming in a full two seconds ahead of Monacan.
The 200 free relay was won by the Jamestown team of Brooke Ericsson (25.42), Charlotte Basic (24.59), Dameron (24.00), and Quinn (23.60) in 1:37.61, which was ahead of Atlee (1:38.39) and Monacan (1:38.67).
Other individual event winners were:
- Lafayette senior Elizabeth Gregory, a Miami (Ohio) commit, won the 200 free in a personal best 1:49.46.
- Sierra Durrette, a sophomore for Atlee, won the 200 IM in 2:03.78.
- Blacksburg freshman Leah Brown won the diving competition with 356.40 points.
- Daniel, a junior from Jamestown, won the 100 fly in a personal best 55.72.
- Warhill senior Bella Lorack captured the 100 free in a personal best 50.54.
- Jillian Wiersema, a junior from Blacksburg, took the 500 free in 4:54.85.
- Ava Eddy, a junior for King George, won the 100 back in 53.95.

Boys’ Recap
It was a close team race, with 20 points separating champion Lafayette and fourth-place Atlee.
Lafayette was led by senior Tommy Watson, who won the 100 breast in 56.10 and swam the second leg of Lafayette’s winning team in the 200 medley relay.
The squad of Jimmy Jacobs (22.86), Watson (25.47), Anson Butler (23.71) and Cole Brenner (21.46) won in a time of 1:33.50.
The two individual standouts were Atlee junior Chandler Rose and Jefferson Forest junior Hudson Rice.
After finishing 2nd in the 50 free last year, Rose won the event in a time of 21.09. He followed up by winning the 100 fly in a personal best time of 49.21.
Rose also swam leadoff for Atlee’s winning squad in the 400 free relay. The quartet of Rose (46.41), Nolan Feighner (49.73), Will Cope (49.03) and Michael Sago (47.26) won the event in a time of 3:12.43.
Rice won the 200 IM in 1:50.90 and then the 500 free in 4:32.45, both personal best times.
Other event winners were:
- Cameron Roy, a senior from Blacksburg, repeated as champion in the 200 free in a time of 1:39.36.
- Another senior from Blacksburg, Soren Anderson, won the diving event with 361.65 points.
- Graham Woodruff, a junior from Jefferson Forest, won the 100 free in a personal best time of 46.48.
- In the 200 free relay, Hanover’s team of Charlie Welsh (21.16), Briggs Zyglocke (21.55), Callan Cotton (21.91), and Colin Eliason (20.62) prevailed in a time of 1:25.24.
- Eliason, a BYU commit and Hanover senior, won the 100 back in a personal best time of 48.60.
