The first day of individual event prelims at the 2026 SEC Championships saw the Tennessee women and the Texas men earn the most ‘A’ finals swims this evening as both teams are projected to score more than 200 points tonight
For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers and divers in the A final, “Mid” to B finalists, and “Down” to C finalists.

Women’s Day 4 Ups/Mids/Downs
The Tennessee women had a very good prelims session, picking up six ‘A’ finalists, three ‘B’ finalists, and two ‘C’ finalists over the three individual events.
They put two swimmers in each event ‘A’ final and they earned the top seed in the women’s 200 fly courtesy of Ella Jansen‘s 1:53.26. After their prelims performance, they are projected to finish the day in 1st overall, 30 points ahead of Florida
Florida and LSU both put four swimmers through to ‘A’ finals while reigning champions and current point leaders, Texas sits in 4th for the session with three ‘A’ finalists and two ‘B’ finalists.

While I have been saying the LADY VOL EMPIRE would be close this year and win SEC next, they could exceed the expectation. Great team synergy, great coaching and the home pool just might get it done.
SO I will predict the BIG ORANGE LADY VOL EMPIRE as the 2026 SEC CHAMPIONS.
The MAN VOLS are doing great in their battle for 3rd with UGA.
SO I will predict the COONSKIN HATTED MAN VOLS in third position over UGA at the end of the meet.
Go Vols!
