The 2026 Queensland Sprint Championships got underway today from the Brisbane Aquatic Centre, giving athletes the chance to tune up their craft ahead of April’s Australian Open Championships.
25-year-old Thomas Nowakowski of USC Spartans took full advantage, topping the podium in both the men’s 50m free and 50m fly events.
In the former, Nowakowski stopped the clock at a mark of 22.33, the sole time of the field to clear the 23-second barrier.
Cruiz’s Tom Robinson represented the next-closest swimmer at 23.00 while Zachary Tabuai rounded out the podium in 23.24.
As for the 50m fly, Nowakowski turned in a time of 24.69 to get the job done, relegating Robinson to runner-up status once again.
Robinson settled for silver in 24.98 as 15-year-old Bryce Krause of Fairholme bagged the bronze in 25.47.
Visiting Japanese swimmer Ai Soma followed suit, capturing victories in the women’s version of both the 50m free and 50m fly.
The 28-year-old turned in a time of 26.09 to win the former and 26.78 to grab gold in the latter.
Additional victors on day one included Somerville House’s Kalani Ireland, topping the men’s 50m back in 25.81 and 16-year-old Sienna Toohey producing a time of 31.24 to reap gold in the women’s 50m breaststroke event.
