Washington and Lee Women, VMI Men Earn Decisive Victories On Senior Day In Lexington

LEXINGTON, Va. —The Washington and Lee University women’s swimming team closed out its dual-meet schedule with a decisive 186–73 victory over Virginia Military Institute on Friday evening. The Generals won the women’s team title by capturing 11 of the 14 women’s events to down the cross-town rivals.

W&L opened the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay and finished strong with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay, highlighting a balanced performance that featured multiple individual event winners and numerous podium finishes.

Up Next: Washington and Lee turns its attention to the ODAC Championships, which begin on Wednesday, Feb. 11, with the 800-yard freestyle relay finals at 7:30 p.m. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. Championship competition continues Thursday through Saturday (Feb. 12–14) with preliminary heats at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. each day.

LEXINGTON, Va. —The Washington and Lee University men’s swimming team closed its dual-meet schedule with a 182–80 loss to Virginia Military Institute on Friday evening at the W&L Natatorium. Facing a deep VMI squad, the Generals picked up one event victory while using the meet as a final tune-up before postseason competition.

W&L opened the meet with its lone win of the day in the 200-yard medley relay before VMI controlled the remaining events to secure the team victory.

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Women’s Swimming & Diving dropped its final home meet of the season at the hands of Washington & Lee Friday evening at Goodall Pool in the VMI Aquatic Center.

The Keydets ended their home slate with a 186-73 loss to the Generals. VMI honored two seniors – Noelle Tong and Valerie Tonnu – prior to tonight’s meet.

VMI had a couple of first-place finishes from Lacy Delzell, the first being in the 200 Free (1:58.70) and the second in the 200 Back (2:11.92). Mackenzie Byrne also scored gold in the 50 Free (24.81).

Tong tallied a pair of second-place marks in her final collegiate home meet, scoring points in the 100 Back (1:00.70) and 100 Free (54.60).

Both relay squads claimed second place, including the 200 Medley Relay team with Tong, Byrne, Parker Belle Fogle, and Emerson Cosner (1:50.98), along with the 200 Free Relay team with Byrne, Tong, Delzell, and Cosner (1:41.18).

Despite the points not counting towards the team score, the Keydet divers took advantage of extra practice ahead of the America East Championships in late February. Isabelle Haer continued to produce big scores, earning 256.65 points in the three-meter and 251.48 in the one-meter to lead VMI.

The Keydets take next week off and will return to action February 6-8 for the Virginia Tech Invite in Christiansburg, Virginia. Prelims are set for 10 a.m. all three days, with finals slated for 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday.

LEXINGTON, Va. – VMI Men’s Swimming & Diving earned its third-straight victory after defeating Washington & Lee Friday evening at Goodall Pool in the VMI Aquatic Center.

The Keydets once again cruised past the Generals, this time with a 182-80 final. VMI dominated throughout the meet, finishing in first place in all but one event. With a 4-3 record, the men have claimed a winning season for the second-straight year. VMI was able to honor four seniors – Lane JonesHayden RoseTee Bowles, and Hampton Wohlford – before the meet.

Caleb Wolf kicked off VMI’s winning streak in the 1,000 Free (9:53.93) and again in the 500 Free (4:45.71) later in the night. Twin brother Joshua Wolf continued the stretch in the 200 Free (1:42.72) and 200 Back (1:56.45).

Continuing the winning streak for the Keydets was Sam Castle in the 100 Back (52.26) and Layne Tucker in the 100 (57.19) and 200 (2:09.17) Breast. Jack Mills followed up with blazing times in the 200 Fly (1:52.69), 100 Fly (51.01), and 100 Free (46.39) for a trio of wins.

Ian Lutz scorched the field in the 50 Free (21.04) to keep the streak alive. Kayleb Eldridge turned on the burners in the last leg of the 200 IM to score first place (2:01.67).

Closing out the night was the 200 Free Relay team with Lutz, Mills, Castle, and Matthew Picard, who finished off the meet with gold (1:23.40).

Despite the points not going towards the team score, the Keydet divers took advantage of the extra practice ahead of the America East Championships in late February. Jones, who was honored before the start of the meet, scored the most points among his Keydet competitors in the one-meter (292.58) and three-meter (272.70).
