Georgia Tech celebrated Senior Day on Friday at home against the visiting Gamecocks of South Carolina. The Gamecock women took the comfortable win 197-102, while the Yellow Jacket men edged out a close win over South Carolina 151-137. Despite the team loss, Georgia Tech’s Vivian Rothwell lowered her own 100 backstroke program record that she set just two weeks earlier against Alabama.
Women’s Recap
South Carolina Sophomore Nora Fluck led the 1-2-3 sweep in the 1000 freestyle for the Gamecock women, clocking 9:44.73 for the win. Emma Reiser set a new lifetime best for 2nd (9:46.17), and Grace Daniels finished 3rd in a season-best effort for South Carolina (10:11.62).
The tandem of Alexis Dalton (1:01.69) and Caroline Kudela (1:02.06) took the top two spots in the 100 breaststroke for the Gamecocks. Dalton’s performance marked her fastest ever time in her winning effort.
South Carolina senior Jordan Agliano notched a lifetime best in the 200 butterfly in 1:54.87, finishing in an NCAA-qualifying time and nearly three seconds better than everyone else in the event. Agliano and her teammate Taylor Grimley later nabbed the top two spots in the 100 fly, with Agliano touching in 52.87 and Grimley closely behind in 52.95.
Junior Kara West clocked the fastest 50 free of the meet, touching in a personal best of 22.59, touching a tenth ahead of Georgia Tech’s Nina Stanisavljevic in 22.69. West completed the sprint free sweep with a lifetime best in the 100 free in 49.30.
Junior Sophie Verzyl dominated the 1-meter diving event for South Carolina in 320.33, more than 50 points better than everyone else in the event. She doubled up on the event wins for the Gamecocks with a score of 378.38 on 3-meter.
Senior Amy Riordan touched more than seven tenths ahead of the field in the 200 back for the Gamecock women, earning the event win in 1:53.16, just ahead of Phoebe Wright of Georgia Tech in 1:53.93.
South Carolina stamped their name all over the 200 breast, with junior Delaney Franklin taking the top spot in 2:11.85. Her teammates Caroline Kudela (2:14.64) and Molly Yacoviello (2:14.65) finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Franklin later led another event sweep, this time in the 400 IM, touching 1st among a top four from South Carolina in 4:12.90.
Senior Breckin Gormley swam her fastest time this season to win the 500 free, notching the NCAA qualifying standard in 4:43.14, leading a top-three sweep for the Gamecocks.
The Yellow Jackets’ first win of the day came on the opening 200 medley relay, where the foursome of Rothwell (24.46), Anne Deedy (27.95), Stanisavljevic (23.46), and Anna Hadjiloizou (22.40) powered to a narrow win over the Gamecocks (1:38.57), touching three tenths faster in 1:38.27, the second fastest relay in program history.
Rothwell took the 100 back win by just 15 hundredths of a second, clocking 52.53. That time lowered her two-week-old school record by just under two tenths of a second (52.72). This marks her 5th top-10 finish in program history in the event, three of which came in January.
Sophomore Lili Gyurinovics took the tight win over South Carolina’s Ellery Ottem (1:46.48) in the 200 free, setting a new career best in the event in 1:46.48.
The Yellow Jacket women capped off their meet in the pool with another relay win. Stanisavljevic (49.49), Hadjiloizou (49.53), Wright (49.34), and Jillian Ferrari (48.34) combined for a more than a second win in the 400 free relay in 3:16.70.
Men’s Recap
Georgia Tech’s men began their day in winning fashion, touching just a tenth faster than South Carolina in the 200 medley relay; Ricky Balduccini (21.71), Joao Caballero (24.07), Stephen Jones (20.80), and a massive anchor leg from Robin Yeboah (19.35) helped catapult the Yellow Jackets to the win in 1:25.93.
Balduccini roared to a new lifetime best in the 100 back, touching in the only sub-47-second time in 46.59.
Freshman Tuncer Berk Erturk marked a new personal best in the 200 fly en route to an event win for Georgia Tech, stopping the clock in 1:43.94. He later put forth a dominant effort in the 400 IM, clocking a more than six-second win in 3:48.47.
Yeboah flew to the lone sub-20 second 50 free of the meet for Georgia Tech, touching ahead of three Gamecocks in 19.74. Yeboah continued his productive outing by leading a 1-2 sweep in the 100 free, clocking 43.45. Balduccini was just behind in 43.62.
Georgia Tech’s Max Fowler added to the win total with his 394.05 point performance in the 1-meter diving event. He later added his 2nd win on the meet with a score of 377.25 on the 3-meter board.
Georgia Tech’s quartet of Yeboah (43.85), Balduccini (42.94), Christopher Richardson (43.36), and Caballero (43.61) combined to put the finishing touches on the Yellow Jackets’ home win in 2:53.76.
South Carolina’s Connor Fry comfortably took the 1000 free win for the Gamecock men, stopping the clock nearly 10 seconds faster than the field in 9:03.92.
South Carolina Freshman Einar Ágústsson dominated the 100 breast, touching more than a second and a half ahead of three Yellow Jackets in 52.36. Ágústsson also added the 200 breast to his individual wins on the day, with a winning time of 1:56.91.
Junior Pierre Largeron earned the win in the 200 free in 1:35.09, leading an event field that saw the top three all swim under 1:36. Largeron added another middle-distance free win in the 500 free in 4:21.32.
Freshman Gamecock Merlin Ficher turned in the only time faster than 1:44 in the 200 back, touching in 1:43.96.
Graduate swimmer Eldor Usmonov claimed the 100 fly victory for South Carolina, clocking 46.29, over half a second faster than the field.
