UC Santa Barbara Cruises To Sweep of Pacific On Martin Luther King Jr. Day

SANTA BARBARA, CA – The Blue and Gold were back in action today for the second day in a row, and the Gauchos took on the visiting University of Pacific Tigers. UC Santa Barbara won definitively in both the Men’s and Women’s dual meets. Final scores read: Men’s: UCSB 160, UOP 102, and Women’s: UCSB 179, UOP 77.

How It Happened

The Gauchos swept the podium in a few races today. Starting with the Women’s 100 Free, Eugenie Laniliss placed first with a time of 50.30. Miranda Stevenson finished second with a time of 51.26, while Alexi Zuckerman secured the sweep with her third-place finish and a time of 51.81. The Men’s 200 Back had Blue and Gold in the first three places as well. Taisei Saito brought the Gold home with a time of 1:48.83, and Lucas Hubbard brought home the second-place finish with a time of 1:49.38. Anneesh Veeravatnam clinched the Men’s sweep of the podium with his third-place finish (1:50.51). The Men’s team completed the sweep in the 200 Fly as well. Billy Picht finished first with a time of 1:49.25, and Aneesh Veeravatnam was right behind him in second with a time of 1:50.51. Bryden Thienlenhaus brought home third place with a time of 1:50.72.

Samantha Banos brought home two individual first place finishes today: 200 Free (1:47.99) and 500 Free (4:50.35). Lelia Symington finished first in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:18.62, Amelie Ogilby was next in second place with a time of 10:27.19.

Next Time Out

The UC Santa Barbara Swim team will be back in the water at Claremont McKenna College on Jan. 24. After next weekend’s meet, the UC Santa Barbara invite will be the last meet prior to the Big West Championships in Houston, Texas, in February.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Spending their Martin Luther King Jr. Day in competition, the Pacific men’s and women’s swimming & diving programs combined for 12 personal-bests as the men fell 160-102 and the women 179-77 to UC Santa Barbara on Monday at the Rec Center Pool.

The men won five events including a clean podium sweep in the men’s 1,000 free. Freshman Casey Lowenborg won the race with a personal-best 9:35.71, while sophomore Matthew Dillon finished right behind with a 9:42.82. Freshman Garrett Taylor took third with a 9:46.58.

The men registered first-place finishes in the 100 free, 100 breast, 200 free and 200 IM. Sophomore Nate Rasmussen won both the 100 and 200 frees with a 45.10 in the 100 and a 1:36.94 in the 200.

In the 100 breast, senior Mattia Giurgevich shined with a first-place time of 55.38. Freshman Raphael Vanhecke won the 200 IM with a 1:50.65, and sophomore Dante Dentino notched a pair of personal-bests with a 1:57.39 in the 200 IM and a 1:42.83 in the 200 free.

The women set a series of personal-bests including a pair from sophomore Christina Agiomamitou. She etched the eighth-fastest time in program history in the 200 free with a 1:48.85, and also turned in a 4:57.45 in the 500 free.

Junior Amanda Schweichler raced for personal-bests of 23.97 in the 50 free and a 51.87 in the 100 free. Freshman Ruby Height clocked in at a personal-best of 1:55.69 in the 200 free.

Freshman Ava Harlos won the 200 IM with a PR of 2:09.53, and third-place finishes came from senior Annelise Thomas with a PR of 56.46 in the 100 fly and freshman Erin Schuch with a 10:32.46 in the 1000 free.

Pacific returns home this weekend to face Simon Fraser and Cal State East Bay on Saturday and Sunday with an 11 a.m. start each day. The Tigers will hold a special Senior Day ceremony Saturday.
