30-Yr-Old Gastaldello Rips 23.41 French Record In Women’s 50 Freestyle

2025 EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The women’s 50m freestyle final was one of the banner events on the final night of action at the 2025 European Short Course Championships.

Winner Kasia Wasick of Poland didn’t disappoint, ripping a monster effort of 23.20 to get to the wall first. That fell just .10 outside the 33-year-old veteran’s lifetime best of 23.10 posted during the 2022 World Cup.

A pair of swimmers touched simultaneously behind Wasick to share silver, with France’s Beryl Gastaldello and Italy’s Sara Curtis hitting 23.41 together.

For 30-year-old Gastaldello, her 23.41 represents a new lifetime best and French national record.

Entering this competition, Olympian Gastaldello had been as quick as 23.66 from 5 years ago, while the French standard rested at the 23.61 Melanie Henique established during that same year of 2020.

Flash forward to tonight, however, and Gastaldello hacked .25 off that former record to become France’s fastest female of all time. This was after the seasoned ace already notched a new national record of 50.60 en route to earning silver in the 100m free during last night’s final session.

Remarkably, Curtis’ silver medal-worthy finish in this 50m freestyle event came just about 30 minutes after her gold in the 50m back. We reported how the 19-year-old clocked a new European Record in that former event.

WOMEN’S 50 FREESTYLE – FINAL

Top 8 Finishers:

  1. Kasia Wasick (POL) – 23.20
  2. Sara Curtis (ITA)/Beryl Gastaldello (FRA) – 23.41
  3. Valerie van Roon (NED)/Silvia di Pietro (ITA) – 23.70
  4. Milou van Wijk (NED) – 23.83
  5. Eva Okaro (GBR) – 23.86
  6. Jana Pavalic (CRO) – 23.87

At 33 years of age, Kasia Wasick won her first major international title in front of her home crowd. She led from wire-to-wire, hitting halfway in 11.17 before storming home to touch just a tenth off her Polish record, and get what is likely to be the biggest cheer of the night.

Sara Curtis backed up her 50 back gold just half an hour ago, tying with Beryl Gastaldello for silver in 23.41, a new lifetime best for both of them. Curtis was just 0.02 off Silvia di Pietro’s Italian record from the 4×50 free relay leadoff on Day 1, while Gastaldello sliced two-tenths off Melanie Henique’s 23.61 mark from 2020.

Valerie van Roon and Silvia di Pietro tied for 4th in 23.70, a new best for the Dutchwoman. World Junior Record holder Eva Okaro was 7th in 23.86, with Croatia’s Jana Pavalic a hundredth off her national record in 8th.
