Swimming legend Mary T. (Meagher) Plant has broken the American Record in the 200 short course meters fly in the 60-64 Masters Swimming Age Group.

Racing at the 1996 Olympic Pool at Georgia Tech, Meagher swam 2:40.92. That broke the previous record of 2:41.25 that was set by prolific Masters swimmer Laura Val in 2011.

Meagher came up just short of the World Record of 2:39.81 that was set by Canadian Ilka Lowensteyn. Meagher holds the current World Record in long course at 2:39.31.

Plant also won the 50 fly (31.19), 100 fly (1:09.06), and 100 free (1:05.86) in her age group at the meet.

After decades away from competition, Meagher returned to the pool as a Masters swimmer earlier this year, swimming at several meets across the country

During her professional career, Plant won five Olympic medals, including golds in the 100 fly, 200 fly, and 400 medley relay at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. She accumulated nine World Championship medals as well, two of which were gold. She held the World Record in the 100-meter fly from 1980 until 1999 and the 200 fly from 1979 until 2000, setting those records when she was 15 and 14, respectively.

Her 200 fly time of 2:05.96 from 1981 remains the U.S. National Age Group Record in that event 44 years later, one of the oldest records on the books.

She’ll almost certainly lower that record with another attempt.

Speaking as someone who has a love/hate relationship with 200 fly, well done Mary T.

Looked like that 34 on the first split was catching up on the last 50.

She went out in 1:14, back in 1:26. That last 50 you could tell she was hurting.

Although GT is normally a great pool, the heater broke days ago. Water was 75 plus the deck was cold. No one could get warm. I hope she gets to try again soon in better conditions.

The pool I trained at in Louisville Kentucky with the Lakeside Seahawks is named after her still.

Most people lose shoulder flexibility with age. NOT MARY T.

I hope I’m still swimming the 2 fly at 60!

That would be sweet if she entered Enhanced Games!
