With his third event scratch in four days, it looks increasingly like Portuguese Record holder Diogo Matos Ribeiro will not be diving into the Lublin pool at all this week. He forgoes the 100 free this morning, where he was the #13 seed in 46.55, to go along with his scratches in the 50 fly (Day 1) and 100 fly (Day 3).

Although no statement has been put out, it appears that the 2024 double World Champion has scratched the whole meet, rather than a selection of individual entries. That is certainly a loss for the Portuguese men’s team, who are yet to put a swimmer into an individual semi-final.

Their women’s team has been more successful, setting national records in the 100 back, 200 back, and 100 breast so far this week, with the highlight coming from Camila Rodrigues Rebelo‘s 4th-place finish in the 200 back, just half a second off the podium.

The only other scratches from a circle-seeded come from Barbara Seemanova, who is out of the meet on the advice of her medical team, and women’s 200 IM #27 seed Smilte Plytnykaite. She has the 50 breaststroke heats tomorrow, which would appear now to be her focus after she knocked three seconds off her 100 breast best in the semi-finals on Wednesday.

Emre Sakci and Kregor Zirk will not swim the men’s 100 free, albeit they were entered with no time. They will also prioritise events tomorrow: the 50 breast for Sakci, where he is the World Record holder in 24.95, and the 200 fly for Estonian Record holder Zirk.

Sakci is already a medalist here in Lublin, taking silver in the 100 breast in a time of 56.22, while Zirk’s best finish so far came in the 400 free. He was 3:40.65 in that event to come within 0.05 seconds of his best and national record of 3:40.60, and was part of the men’s 4×50 free relay which set an Estonian Record in the heats of the event.

Yes portuguese federation said before the meet started that he wasn’t going to Lublin because “he has a physical limitation that prevents him to be in the optimal participation conditions”
