The 2025 European Short Course Championships saw the nation of the Netherlands soar to the top of the medal standings, courtesy of dynamo Marrit Steenbergen‘s impressive double.
Taking on the women’s 100m IM and 200m free during this evening’s session, the versatile 25-year-old not only topped the podium in both but also produced new European records in each event as well.
In the 100m IM, Steenbergen ripped a monster mark of 56.26 to knock down Hungarian Olympic icon Katinka Hosszu‘s longstanding former record of 56.51 established in 2017.
Later in the 200m free, Steenbergen turned in a stellar time of 1:50.33, erasing Swedish multi-Olympic champion Sarah Sjostrom‘s previous benchmark of 1:50.43 also from 2017.
Italy and Great Britain remain among the top three performing nations halfway through this elite competition, while Daniel Wiffen‘s gold in the men’s 1500m free and Evan Bailey‘s 200m free bronze boosted Ireland up from 5th place yesterday to 4th as of now.
A shining note for Italy was how their mixed 4x50m free relay fired off a new World Record to cap off the evening. As for GBR, Duncan Scott led a 1-2 punch in the men’s 200m free, with teammate and 400m free gold medalist Jack McMillan claiming silver.
Noe Ponti‘s 100m IM also kept his nation of Switzerland among the mix with three days yet to transpire.
