Arab High School Girls, Randolph Boys Win Titles At Alabama 1A-5A State Championships

It was history for the Arab High School girls and a return to the top for the Randolph boys at the Alabama High School Athletic Association 1A-5A State Championships.

Arab captured its first state championship in program history, outdistancing runner-up Lamp by 25 points in the girls’ meet. The Randolph boys’ team won its second overall title and first since 2021, finishing 66 points ahead of the School of Cyber Technology.

Girls’ Recap

Individually, the biggest story was that a seventh-grader swept the sprint freestyle events.

Kate Whatley, a 13-year-old from Lee Scott Academy, won the 50 free in a time of 23.95 and then captured the 100 free in a time of 51.81. Among 13-year-old girls’ this season, Whatley has the 2nd-fastest time in both the 50 and 100 free.

School of Cyber Technology freshman Jenny Baumgartner and Westminster Christian’s Leilani Teter also won two events.

Baumgartner first won the 200 IM in 2:07.32, and then later swam a personal best time of 1:05.37 to win the 100 breast.

Teter won the 100 fly in a time of 59.42 after finishing 2nd in the event last year, and then later repeated as champion in the 100 back in a personal best time of 57.06.

An eighth grader, Liddie Mooty of Westminster Christian, won the 500 free in a time of 5:25.13. Randolph junior Abby Banks won the 200 free in a personal best time of 1:55.96 after finishing 2nd in the event last year, while St. John Paul Catholic’s Kallie Rye captured the 1-meter diving event with 307.70 points.

Arab High School captured its first title on the strength of its relays, sweeping all three events.

In the 200 medley relay, the team of Karington Harper (29.82), Anderly Shumate (31.24), Maddie Nunley (27.02) and Bailey Parks (25.86) won in a time of 1:53.94.

Arab also won the 200 free relay behind the team of Parks (25.82), Harper (25.12), Graylyn Gilbreath (26.78) and Nunley (25.43) won in a time of 1:43.15.

In the 400 free relay, Arab’s quartet of Harper (57.48), Parks (57.88), Gilbreath (59.20) and Shumate (57.03) won that event in 3:51.99.

Boys’ Recap

Randolph was led by senior Austin Shadinger, who swam a personal best time of 1:46.02 to win the 200 free and then repeated as champion in the 500 free with a time of 4:46.99.

Shadinger also swam the second leg for Randolph’s 200 medley relay team, which won in 1:41.87. The squad consisted of Brady Weglage (27.74), Shadinger (27.92), Sam Frazier (23.17) and Grant McCloud (23.04).

The 200 free relay was captured by Scottsboro’s quartet of Ben Bradford (23.60), Jacob Fanning (24.17), Ryder Linville (22.54), and Craft Sanders (21.90) in a time of 1:32.21.

The 400 free relay was won by the School of Cyber Technology team of Oliver Smith (49.90), Trenton Holcombe (52.24), Oliver Parkinson (50.15) and Landon Quinn (47.42) in a time of 3:19.71.

Quinn, a sophomore, was the only other multiple-event winner individually. He first won the 200 IM in a personal best time of 1:51.98, and then later won the 100 breast in a personal best 57.92.

Other individual winners were:

  • Bayshore Christian sophomore David Rainer topped the field in the 50 free with a personal best time of 21.53.
  • St. John Paul Catholic’s Isaac Whetstone won 1-meter diving with 385.05 points.
  • David An, a sophomore from Montgomery Academy, captured the 100 fly in a personal best time of 52.27.
  • Sanders, a senior from Scottsboro, improved on a 3rd-place finish in the 100 free last year, winning that event this time in a time of 48.92.
  • Westminster Christian senior Brady Hamill won the 100 back in a personal best time of 53.15.
