BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland opened the H2ounds Invitational with a series of standout performances Friday.
The Greyhounds lead the women’s race with 922 points, and the men are on top with 1,059; Colgate is second in both.
In the women’s 200-yard medley relay, Loyola’s A team of Virginia Walsh, Bryce Gold, Christine Datovech and Haley Robinson raced to victory, clocking 1:41.30 to secure first place.
The women’s 500-yard freestyle saw Loyola pack the top of the A final, with Michela Schultz finishing third in 5:00.99, Ellie Davis fourth in 5:01.44 and Adrianna Caponiti fifth in 5:03.13.
Riley Fried added a runner-up finish in the 200-yard individual medley, while Julia Mason placed fifth. Haley Robinson sprinted to the win in the 50-yard freestyle, touching first in 22.97. Teammates Gianna Davis and Christine Datovech finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Loyola’s A 800-yard freestyle relay team, featuring Cecilia Van Lierop, Schultz, Kate O’Brien and Fried, placed second in 7:35.03.
On the men’s side, Loyola swept the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay, with Joe Hayburn, Michael Venit, Hans Van Lierop and Derek Feldman leading the A team to victory in 1:25.42. Hayburn set a pool record in the 50 backstroke, leading off the event for Loyola with a split of 21.34.
The Greyhounds dominated the 500-yard freestyle, as Kiernan Leary won the event in 4:26.61, Hayden Bartz finished second, Gavin Abelende took fourth and Pierre Leroy was sixth.
Loyola also claimed the top four places in the 200-yard individual medley, led by Venit (1:49.27), Owen Glaser, Floyd Conlin and Kaden Fatta.
The Greyhounds controlled the 50-yard freestyle, sweeping the top six spots, with Brennan Coyle (20.14), Feldman and Liam Schindler leading the way.
Loyola’s A and B 800-yard freestyle relay teams capped the night with first- and second-place finishes. Luke Dwyer, Thomas Cechini, Gavin Abelende and Colin Davis setting a meet and pool record with a time of 6:36.15.
In time trials on Friday, Robinson set a pool and school record in the 50 butterfly in 23.93, while Hans van Lierop did the same for the men in the event in 21.08. Venit scored a pool and team record, as well, in the 50 breaststroke, swimming 24.33.
All three qualified for the US Open Championships next month with their times.
