(UPDATED) Mollie O’Callaghan Bleeds from Thumb Ahead of 100 Free World Cup Final

2025 WORLD AQUATICS SWIMMING WORLD CUP – Westmont

Update:

On the eve of the start of the Toronto stop, O’Callaghan posted a photograph of her broken thumbnail.

Barry Revzin contributed to this report.

Just seconds ahead of the 100 freestyle final on the final day of competition in Westmont, Mollie O’Callaghan, fresh off of a World Record last night in the 200 free, appeared to be in discomfort, waving her right hand back and forth, while drops of blood appeared on the side of her racing suit.

The following video from NBC Sports shows the entirety of the walkouts and the race itself. With O’Callaghan eventually being treated by prominent American Coach David Marsh.

Prior to the race, the walkout appeared normal, O’Callaghan looked focused, and with an intent to race. But the longer the walkouts continued, O’Callaghan appeared to be waving her hand and looking over to the side of the pool, this is noticed during Marrit Steenbergen‘s walkout (~51 second mark of the video).

Then for the following two walkouts (Taylor Ruck and Olivia Wunsch,), she does not appear to be behind the blocks (~1:01-1:25 mark of the video). She ended up back behind her lane, this time aggressively shaking her hand.

Once everybody was behind their assigned lanes, O’Callaghan continued to shake that right hand againts her body. As the camera cut to her, there appeared to be red marks on that right side, accompanying the water that she had splashed herself with.

There was a brief delay (~2:12 mark in the video) as she left her lane to get a bandage on her right thumb. Marsh was the one who applied the bandage to the thumb of the Australian freestyler.

Despite the stoppage, O’Callaghan still managed to turn in a runner-up finish in the race, clocking 51.44, touching only behind American Kate Douglass, who would go on to break the World Record in 50.19.

While World Aquatics refused to share any details of what happened, SwimSwam’s Barry Revzin, who is at the meet, said it appeared to be a broken finger nail, and that she had a bandaid on her thumb.

I mean, everything is relative to where you work right?

That would be brutally painful to swim a 100 Free immediately after.

Did the people calling her a sook actually stop to look at the photo? Or just went straight to the comments to slander?

I always wondered how women are allowed to compete with those long fingernails, they could be considered tiny paddles, no?

You are so right! Artificial nails make your hands bigger and you pull more water. They really should be illegal.

Dave Marsh being the one to help her with the bandaid is so wild to me

She’ll probably be swimming for Cal this January as a result of their interaction.

Yeah that 51.44 made no sense after a 1:49. She wouldn’t have beaten KD, who was sensational, but it looked like a 50.5-50.8 was in the works.

Funny how people who have probably achieved little in their lives are quick to label champions with a negative tag at any slight hiccup
