It has been almost four years since we last saw Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Andrew swim a 50 breaststroke in the 27.7 range. Today, in the prelims of the 50 breaststroke, Andrew touched in the 2nd fastest time of the prelims in 26.75, his fastest performance since the 2022 World Championships.

Andrew was one of just two swimmers to swim a sub-27-second time in the prelims, the other being Van Mathias, who clocked a new Pro Swim Series record in 26.53.

2022 was without a doubt Andrew’s best year for the 50 breast, that was the year he clocked his career best 26.52, which still stands as the fastest time ever on US soil, and a World Championships outing that included three 26.7 swims: a 26.73 semifinal swim, 26.72 finals time, and a prelims 26.71, which all rank inside his top five fastest times ever.

The last time Andrew was within that 26.7 range was at that meet, though this most recent swim now moves into his top five fastest of his career, just ahead of the 2022 International Team Trials, where he clocked 26.78 in April of that year.

Michael Andrew‘s Fastest 50 Breaststroke Times of his Career:

  1. 26.52 (April 2022) Current US Open Record
  2. 26.71 (June 2022)
  3. 26.72 (June 2022)
  4. 26.73 (June 2022)
  5. 26.75 (June 2026)
  6. 26.78 (April 2022)
  7. 26.84 (twice; July 2018/March 2023)
  8. (tie)
  9. 26.86 (July 2018)
  10. 26.87 (June 2023)

That new time for Andrew also earns him a solid spot inside the current World Rankings this season, tying him for 10th with China’s breaststroke ace Qin Haiyang at 26.75.

Decently positive sign for his breaststroke would have some more confidence if he could go even faster tonight and while not likely be close to Van.
