Georgia Tech Dual Meet Tournament Day 1 Preview

The Georgia Tech Dual Meet Tournament started this morning, and before all four meets get underway, we wanted to look at potential matchups to watch out for and make our predictions.

There are eight teams competing in a series of meets this weekend: Georgia Tech, Georgia, NC State, Auburn, George Washington, Army West Point, Florida State, and Minnesota.

The first two meets are currently in progress with Georgia facing George Washington and Auburn battling Minnesota.

At 11:30 am EST, NC State will face Georgia Tech while Florida State will swim against Army West Point.

The meet will swim a series of dual meets, following a typical tournament bracket where the Championship meet is scheduled for Saturday at 2:30pm EST, and the whole thing is being streamed on the ACC+ Network.

  • Friday, October 17th
    • Morning
      • 8:30 am- Wave 1 meets (Georgia vs George Washington, Auburn vs Minnesota)
      • 11:30 am- Wave 2 meets (NC State vs Georgia Tech, Florida State vs Army West Point)
    • Afternoon
      • 3 pm- Wave 1 championship (winners of first meets) & Wave 1 consolation (losers of first meets)
      • 6 pm- Wave 2 championship (winners of first meets) & Wave 2 consolation (losers of first meets)
  • Saturday, October 18th
    • Morning
      • 8:30 am- 5th/6th place, 7th/8th place meets (consolation teams)
      • 11:30 am- 3rd/4th place meet (losers of championship finals)
      • 2:30 pm- Championship Meet

The top two teams appear to be Georgia and NC State, but the earliest we will see a potential matchup between the two is tomorrow with Georgia competing in Wave 1 and NC State in Wave 2.

Today, there are a few fun races we could see between the teams. Florida State and NC State are in the same wave, and will likely win their respective dual meets to make it to the Wave 2 championship.

Florida State has some strong men’s swimmers including Michel Arkhangelskiy and Tommaso Baravelli who will lead the men’s program in what could be a fun meet against the NC State Wolfpack. Arkhangelskiy and Baravelli were both right in line with the fastest swimmers on the Wolfpack last season and we saw Florida State pull off a major upset last January. They may have the disadvantage in longer events, but with each meet being an abbreviated schedule, it could be a tight race.

The Wave 1 Championship will see Georgia, led by Kennedi Dobson and Luca Urlando. racing Auburn for one of the top spots in tomorrow’s sessions.

The consol meets could also feature some interesting matchups with Auburn racing George Washington in Wave 1 and the Wave 2 meet likely being Army West Point against Georgia Tech.

Our predictions for the final results:

  1. NC State
  2. Georgia
  3. Florida State
  4. Auburn
  5. Minnesota
  6. Georgia Tech
  7. Army West Point
  8. George Washington

No offense to the ACC+ Network, but I wish this were on a more mainstream platform like YouTube, Peacock, or Prime TV. I would like to watch this neat competition, but not enough to buy another streaming service that I have 0 other use for. Such a first-world complaint about a first-world issue. Β―\_(ツ)_/Β― I just hope it goes well enough to make it into a bigger platform next year.

Let the big sports have ACC+ Network. Pawn off swimming, track, etc to the more mainstream options and split the streaming revenue 50/50. I think it would be a positive for everyone.

To be clear… is it the final combined team score (both M+W) that determines the Win or Loss in that round?
I’m just thankful this thread popped up at all. One of the innovative fun things in the NCAA swimming ecosystem this season, and I was beginning to worry all we would see this weekend was endless pages about Westmont and Gretchen… nothing against either of them.
