Fitter and Faster Swim CampsΒ is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Owen Harmon of Simpsonville, South Carolina, has announced his commitment to swim and study at the University of South Carolina, becoming the first publicized commit in the Gamecocks’ class of 2030. He trains year-round with Greater Spartanburg YMCA and attends Southside Christian School.

Harmon made the announcement on Instagram, writing:

I am humbled to announce my commitment to The University of South Carolina to continue my academic and athletic career. Thank you to every coach, teammate, friend, and family member for contributing to my journey and making it one I can be proud of. Thank you to Coach Jason and Coach Nils at South Carolina for giving me this distinct opportunity to be great. All glory to God! Go Cocks!

Harmon, a breaststroke specialist, opened his 2024-25 season at the South Carolina High School League (SCHSL) 3A Championships in October. He got things rolling with a 26.91 breaststroke leg on the sixth-place 200 medley relay before touching fourth in the 100 breast (59.61) and sixth in the 200 IM (1:59.74). He wasn’t far off his lifetime bests of 57.78 and 1:57.72, as he matched his 100 breast placement from his freshman year while dropping one spot in the 200 IM.

At the Arena Capital Classic in November, Harmon produced his first big drops of the year. Most notably, he clocked 57.24 in the prelims of the 100 breast, then broke the 57-second barrier in the final, where he took sixth with a 56.61. He also posted a pair of best times in the 200 breast, hitting 2:05.94 in prelims and dropping to 2:03.77 to claim the bronze. He was a key asset on both medley relays, providing breast splits of 25.12 and 56.83 as the teams finished fourth.

Harmon wrapped up his season at the YMCA Nationals in March, where he once again swam personal bests in both prelims and finals of the breast events. He placed higher in the 200, logging 2:02.82 in prelims and stopping the clock at 2:01.32 to finish seventh. In the 100, he notched 56.44 in prelims and 55.90 in finals to touch eighth. It was a major leap from the previous year, when he finished 28th in the 200 breast and 29th in the 100.

While he did not contest the 200 medley relay, he swam on the 400 relay, splitting 55.81, and helped Greater Spartanburg take the runner-up spot.

It’s very early into the 2025-26 season, but Harmon has already lowered his 100 breast best to 55.79, a time he swam to win the SCHSL Championship on October 10th.

Top SCY Times:

  • 100 Breaststroke: 55.79
  • 200 Breaststroke: 2:01.32
  • 200 IM: 1:55.47

South Carolina, guided by head coach Jeff Poppell, finished 11th out of 11 teams at the 2025 SEC Championships. The Gamecocks went on to place 39th at the NCAA Championships, where sophomore diver Maxwell Spencer scored the team’s lone point.

At the conference meet, where ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ finals are offered, it took times of 52.98 (100 breast), 1:56.19 (200 breast), and 1:44.91 (200 IM) to score in his main events. According to the team’s 2024-25 depth chart, Harmon would have ranked fifth in the 200 breast and sixth in the 100 breast and 200 IM, and he still has two full seasons to improve his times before arriving in Columbia.

Sophomore Linus Kahl led the team in both breaststroke events with times of 52.42 and 1:54.40, as well as the 200 IM at 1:43.69, while sophomore Liam Kerns was a touch behind in both with marks of 52.55 and 1:54.70. Harmon will overlap with the duo for one year, which should provide great training partners and set up a strong career with the Gamecocks.

Juniors Michael Cooper (55.41/1:59.62), Quinn Buck (55.57), and Jack Carman (55.65/2:00.77) were the others who posted quicker times last season, but they will all be graduated once Harmon steps foot on campus, meaning he’ll have an immediate impact.

Is the headline wrong, or is he taking a gap year? He is currently a senior (class of 2026).

No I think it’s right. Owen is Class of 2026 and will start at South Carolina in the fall of 2026.
