VERMILLION, S.D. — South Dakota hosted their first meet of the season and walked away with a win for both the women’s and men’s teams.  The Coyotes had a first place finish in every event but three, and six athletes won multiple individual events.

The women’s team was competing against Minnesota State and won with a score of 218.5-81.5. The men’s team was competing against Augustana and won with a score of 224-74.

Senior Taylor Buhr was the champion of the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.37 and the 200 breast with a time of 2:26.00. Fellow senior Tatum O’Shea took the 200 back in 2:07.79, while another senior, Mady Schmidt, won the three-meter diving event with a score of 240.70.

Juniors Joaquin Contreras-Fallico and Gabbie Ahrendt also secured multiple wins on the day. Contreras-Fallico won the 100 back in 51.36 and the 200 back in 1:52.67. Ahrendt took the 200 free in 1:56.74 and the 200 Individual Medley in 2:10.74.

Sophmore Alex Parkinson claimed multiple wins in the 1000 free (9:30.06) and the 500 free (4:37.88). Other sophomores with first place finishes were Emily Diprospero in the 1000 free (10:40.70), Will Barth in the 200 free (1:44.09), Maddie Schrank in the 200 fly (2:08.98), Nick Rounds in the 50 free (20.42), Madilyn Gehrke in the 100 free in 53.99, and David Mayer in the 100 free in 47.93.

Six freshmen earned their first wins of their career, with Brock Russell and Maddox Mork claiming multiple events. Russel in the 100 breast (57.79), the 200 breast (2:06.67) and the 200 individual medley (1:53.67), and Mork in the one-meter and three-meter diving events.

Joining them is Henley Hatzung who took the 50 free in 24.16, Quin Mahler-Moreno who won the 500 free in 5:15.37, Lauren Eschmeyer with the win in the 100 fly in 58.80, and Dylan Alt who won the 100 fly with a time of 50.47.

Both teams won both of the relays in the meet, the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay.

Mahler-Moreno and Schrank were a part of the women’s 200 medley team, along with Anna Balfanz and Alex Peterson. Hatzung, Gehrke, and Ahrendt swam the 400 free relay with Carson White.

For the men’s team, Rounds and Alt were joined by Ethan LaBounty and Jordan Hogue to win the 200 medley. Rounds, Mayer, and Hogue were on the winning 400 free relay with James Schreiber.

The Coyotes swimming and diving team will be back in action on Friday, October 10 in Minneapolis, Minn. when they take on Minnesota and Nebraska in a tri-dual.

VERMILLION, S.D. — The University of South Dakota secured a victory over Minnesota State and Augustana in a multi-team swimming and diving meet on Friday

USD (1-0) recorded 218.5 points, while MSU (0-1) tallied 81.5.

“The coaches and I were very pleased with the team’s overall performance tonight,” head coach Nathan Owens said. “It was tough up hill sledding with a full long event format and so many 200’s. We definitely have a fair amount of rust from the off season, but we saw a lot of bright spots to build on during the coming weeks. This meet was a good starting point, now we’ll try to progress week to week, hopefully continue getting better and better. ”

Sophomore Savannah Acker showcased her versatility and endurance by competing in multiple events. She was instrumental in the women’s 200-yard medley relay, where her team secured a second-place finish with a time of 1:48.41. Individually, Acker secured a second-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 58.93 and contributed a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke, clocking in at 2:09.57. She continued her standout performance by clocking 2:13.88 in the 200 Yard Individual Medley.

Sophomore Sydney Pippert demonstrated her sprinting abilities in the 200-yard medley relay, helping her team clinch second place. She also excelled in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing third with a time of 55.19, and contributed to the team effort in the 400-yard freestyle relay, where the Mavericks recorded a time of 3:40.17.

Freshman Jessica Paulsen competed fiercely in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in the top six with a time of 1:09.89, and again in the 200-yard breaststroke with a solid time of 2:32.37. Her consistent performance in breaststroke events bolstered the Mavericks’ competitive edge.

Sophomore Aubrey Schueler, another 19-year-old Maverick, participated in the women’s 200-yard medley relay that finished fifth with a time of 1:51.26. She also showed her strength in the 400-yard freestyle relay, contributing to a time of 3:49.66, demonstrating her reliability in both individual and team events.

Freshman Gracie Bartholomew helped her relay team in the women’s 400-yard freestyle to a competitive finish, clocking in at 3:40.17. Individually, she competed well in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing sixth with a time of 25.78, adding valuable points to the Mavericks’ overall score.

Sophomore Averi Larsen contributed significantly in the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a 30.29-second breaststroke leg. She further showcased her speed in the 50 Yard Freestyle, finishing third with a time of 24.93 seconds, and helped the team secure a third-place finish in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay with a split of 54.92 seconds.

Junior Natalie Freeman took first place in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 216.40. She also took second place in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 235.30.

Looking ahead, the Mavericks will compete in the St. Cloud Invite on October 11, 2025. The event is set to begin at 2 p.m. and will take place in Rochester, Minnesota. This competition will see Minnesota State as the visiting team.
