23.6/51.6 Sprint Freestyler Mia Boccio Commits To Rutgers University For Fall 2026

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Mia Boccio of Galena, Ohio has announced her commitment to swim and study at Rutgers University, starting in the fall of 2026. She trains year-round with Central Ohio Aquatics and attends Olentangy Orange High School.

Boccio made the announcement on Instagram, writing:

“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Rutgers University! I would like to thank God, my family, my friends and my coaches for always supporting me. I would also like to thank the Rutgers coaching staff for this amazing opportunity. I cannot wait to be apart of this great team!

The future Scarlet Knight is a sprint freestyle specialist who is also a strong butterflier. She has consistently sliced off time in her main events during each year of her career.

Boccio’s target meets of the 2024-25 high school season were the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Southeast Championship and the proceeding State Championship, which were held less than a week apart in February.

At the Southeast meet, she hit the wall with a pair of best times, taking silver in the 100 free (51.69) in addition to finishing sixth in the 50 free (23.69). She helped both the 200 medley and 400 free relays to fourth, splitting 25.72 on the fly leg of the medley and 51.75 anchoring the 400 free.

She continued her momentum into State by kicking things off with a quicker 25.20 on the medley relay, with her team securing 11th, before logging a personal-best 23.65 to take seventh in the 50 free. She stopped the clock at 51.77 in the 100 free for a tenth-place finish before ending the day with a 51.23 anchor on the 400 free relay that was fifth.

Boccio’s results marked significant upgrades from her sophomore season—10th in the 50 free and 13th in the 100 free—and her freshman campaign—12th in the 50 free and 17th in the 100 fly.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 Freestyle: 23.65
  • 100 Freestyle: 51.69
  • 100 Butterfly: 57.01

The Scarlet Knights are led by head coach Jon Maccoll, who is in his eighth season at the helm of the program. The women placed 11th out of 14 teams at the 2025 Big Ten Championships, finishing just 34 points shy of 10th-place University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Boccio will have an immediate impact for Rutgers once she arrives on campus, especially on the freestyle relays. On the team’s 2024-25 depth chart, she would have ranked third in the 50 free, fifth in the 100 free, and seventh in the 100 fly. Sophomore Brooke Thompson topped the 50 free with a time of 23.53, junior Molly Urkiel led the 100 free in 50.48, and senior Cam Kuriger was the fastest 100 flier at 54.01.

At the 2025 Big Ten meet, where ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘C’ finals are scored, it took times of 22.55 and 49.60 to make finals in the sprint freestyles and 53.45 in the 100 fly.

Boccio will join Casey Zentz, Emily Volchansky, Emilianna Gonzalez, and Tayla Smith at Rutgers in the fall of 2026 as part of the university’s incoming recruiting class.
