New Dad Cameron McEvoy Ready For 25 Freestyle At Aussie SC Championships

2025 AUSTRALIAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 2025 Australian Short Course Championships are set to kick off on Wednesday, October 1st, from the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre.

Although the entries are on the lighter side than in years past, we’re slated to see Olympians Sam Short, Matt Temple and Cameron McEvoy take to the pool over the course of the three-day competition.

As for 31-year-old McEvoy, the new dad is entered in just one event, the men’s 25m freestyle, as a follow-up to his World Championships gold medal in the 50m free.

McEvoy recently posted on social media, giving us a glimpse into his latest training block.

“Week 5 of the volume gym block. 7 weeks of no swimming since Worlds. First session back was Tuesday this week. Race 25m heat and final next Wednesday.”

It’s widely known that McEvoy doesn’t follow a traditional swim-heavy training methodology; instead, the Aussie focuses on out-of-the-pool work. The regimen has been working for McEvoy, as he became the reigning Olympic champion and followed up with gold in Singapore.

Given McEvoy is going to turn up to this meet, you might think at a stretch he might have had a shot at the 50 free National record. His best time 20.75 clocked a full decade ago in 2015, ranks him second behind Kyle Chalmers’ Aussie record 20.68 posted in 2021.

Personally I’m looking forward to see what times Sam Short can produce in his freestyle events. Currently the only top ten SC Aussie ranking his name can be found is 6th place in the 800 freestyle posted back in 2020, well before he made the National team!

I think McEvoy basically convinced swimming Australia to add it into the schedule

Indeed, before you know it they will include 25m events in all strokes at the Olympics! 🙂

I love it!!!

I thought it was a typo at first. But no. They have a 25m at this pro meet.

In my perfect world, 25m would be added to SC WC, and 5000m would be added to LC WC.

I theorize that the 25m WR should be 9.3, if feet on wall 9.55 has been done.

Thanks for reading. Downvote me now. 😂

He made it up and they just started doing it.

I think it’s silly but if you’re an individual world and Olympic champion you’re allowed to implement some silly ideas as a treat

What’s silly about it? The race goes for the same amount of time as the 100m sprint. Is that even silly because they don’t run the whole way around track?

And indoors they have a 60m event… it is over in 6.5 seconds lol

In fact 50m is the shortest recognized track event, with an official WR.

I get it: A split second after the gun, running is at its slowest, and swimming is at its fastest.

But 25m needs more love.
