The 2025 Far Western Championships were rich with notable performances, featuring many high-level swims in the boys’ and girls’ distance freestyle events.

The most notable swim of the meet came from age group prodigy Ayden Tan. The San Ramon Valley Aquatics swimmer broke his 6th national age group record of the summer, clocking 24.95 to win the boys’ 11-12 50 free. Tan took first in every event he swam: the boys’ 11-12 50 free (24.95), 200 free (2:00.88), 50 back (28.86), 100 back (1:04.92), 200 back (2:14.43), 50 fly (26.96), and 100 fly (1:00.32). Aside from Tan’s performance, Pleasanton Seahawks’ Dmitriy Oranskiy and CJ Lee displayed incredible range in the freestyle events, occupying podium positions in the boys’ 15-16 100, 200, 400, and 800 free.

Oranskiy won the boys’ 15-16 100 free in a best-ever time of 53.19. He was followed by Pleasanton Seahawks’ Ryan Wong (53.84), and then Lee, who finished in 54.23. They also took center stage in the boys’ 15-16 200 free. Oranskiy, who is currently the nation’s 79th quickest 200 freestyler in the 15-16 age group, won the event in 1:55.23, slightly off his best time of 1:55.09. Lee finished second in 1:55.46, a couple of tenths off of his personal best of 1:55.28, which has him ranked 88th in the nation.

The boys’ 15-16 400 free featured three nationally ranked swimmers in the 15-16 age group this year. Lee took gold, dropping almost six seconds from his lifetime best and propelling himself to 50th in the nation. Irvine Novaquatic’s Eric Chen touched the wall second in 4:04.23, a personal best by three and a half seconds that is the 53rd fastest time this year. Oranskiy placed third in 4:07.48, a couple of seconds off his best time of 4:05.09 that ranks him 63rd in the nation.

The boys’ 15-16 800 free saw more top-100 swims from Oranskiy and Lee, but both were beaten to the wall by their Pleasanton Seahawks teammate Jake Loftus. Loftus, 15, took gold in 8:28.91, finishing ahead of Lee (8:30.67), who took second, and Oranskiy (8:31.39), who placed third. All three swimmers threw down huge personal bests and improved their positions in the top 100 15-16 year old performers this year. Loftus is now ranked 47th, Lee 59th, and Oranskiy 65th.

Loftus capped off the display of distance speed in the boys’ 15-16 1500 free. He stopped the clock in 16:07.95, a fourteen second personal best that makes him the 31st fastest 15-16 year old in the event this year.

Terrapins Swim Team’s Marina Didenko had a standout meet. The 13-year-old won the girls’ 13-14 200 IM (2:21.10), 100 breast (1:13.54), and 800 free (9:26.90), and took second in the girls’ 13-14 400 free (4:30.18), 200 free (2:08.17), and 200 breast (2:40.68). Each of those times were personal bests that either earned Didenko a spot in this year’s national rankings or pushed her farther up the list. In the 2025 girls’ 13-14 age group rankings, Didenko is 46th in the 200 free, 44th in the 400 free, 69th in the 800 free, 28th in the 100 breast, 39th in the 200 breast, and 14th in the 200 IM.

Pleasanton Seahawks’ Francesca Lin and Santa Clara Swim Club’s Itzabella Cinco laid down impressive performances across the girls’ 15-16 200, 400, and 800 free.

Lin, 15, won the 200 free in a lifetime best of 2:06.73. Cinco touched the wall in 2:07.16, a four and a half second time drop that earned her second. Both were out-touched in the girls’ 15-16 400 free by San Ramon Valley Aquatics’ Rosa Houberg, who won in a personal best of 4:27.21. Cinco swam a six-second personal best to finish 2nd (4:27.53), and Lin closed out the podium in 4:27.75. Cinco reached the top step in the 800 free, swimming to a seven-second time drop of 9:19.47. Lin took 2nd in the event, stopping the clock in 9:25.72.
