Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
South African Age Group Record-holder Kris Mihaylov has flipped his commitment from the University of Virginia to the University of Georgia for January 2026. Mihaylov, who is from Johannesburg, South Africa, had originally committed to UVA back in March.
Here is Mihaylov’s statement on his new commitment to UGA:
I’m excited to announce that I have flipped my committed to continue my academic and swimming journey at the University of Georgia! I’d like to sincerely thank the coaches and team at UVA for their time, support, and opportunity. I’m grateful for everyone who’s helped me get here and can’t wait to be alongside the bulldogs!🔴⚫️
Mihaylov was slated to join Virginia in January 2026, which is presumably when he’ll now join Georgia. The South African school year runs from January to December, so it is common for South African student-athletes to join U.S. college teams in January.
Mihaylov is a huge recruit for the Bulldogs. He’s a freestyle specialist, though he has some very solid IM and fly times to boot. He holds more than a dozen South African national age group records, all of which are in freestyle events.
The Bulldogs are coached by Georgia South African-born Neil Versfeld and have another one of South Africa’s top backstroker Ruard Van Renen on the roster as well as a rising senior.
Here’s a look at Mihaylov’s career bests in LCM:
Best LCM times:
- 100 free – 49.72
- 200 free – 1:48.19
- 400 free – 3:55.28
- 800 free – 8:09.32
- 1500 free – 15:33.16
- 400 IM – 4:24.61
- 100 fly – 54.43
Given his LCM times, Mihaylov has the potential to make an immediate impact in the NCAA. He’s a versatile freestyler, so it will be interesting to see where UGA wants to focus on developing him.
Mihaylov will be joining a large Georgia class of 2029 that features Tyler Grafmiller, Finn Wendland, Hayden Meyers, Luke Sandberg, Sascha Macht, Finn Hammer, Sean Green, Jayson Ross, and Wesley Ng. This is a UGA class that’s pretty loaded with freestylers. Green jumps off the page the most, holding careers bests in yards of 1:34 in the 200 free, 4:16 in the 500, and 14:49 in the 1650. Meanwhile, Ross has been 43.96 in the 100 free, Sandberg is 43.91 in the 100 and 1:36.04 in the 200, Macht is 44.10 in the 100 and 1:37.19 in the 200, and Grafmiller is 44.40 in the 100 and 1:38.19 in the 200. That gives UGA some very promising individual swimmers in this class, as well as a lot of potential relay contributors.

Congratulations to young Kris – UGA is a great place with amazing swimming tradition. The SEC is the place to be!
Too many foreign coaches in the United States of America, not really dedicated to the American swimmers: they need to coach in their homeland if they are recruiting their own homeland..
They would represent their own country in the World and the Olympics even though they are training and practicing with few American swimmers than international swimmers, but I blame the universities that should have more American athletes than international athletes for their NCAA Championships!!!
There are American swimmers who can match or succeed his qualifications too so give me a break!!!!
Thanks for sharing though: and one more thing: it sounds like a betrayal to me from UVA to UGA when Virginia accepted him first even… Read more »

SMART. He will flourish at Georgia while the rest of the TikTok boys plateau at UVA.
Maybe influenced by van renen cause he’s South African too. Congrats tho
Could he have flipped because of roster or scholarship limits made him look elsewhere?
A guy his speed would not have been kicked off the UVA roster. They haven’t looked too promising in recent years. Plus if roster limits were the issue, going to the SEC, where the men’s rosters are now especially small, wouldn’t seem likely.
I’m not trying to expose anyone’s personal business, but just to clear it up so people don’t ask a billion questions: he had a girlfriend on the team. He no longer has a girlfriend on the team. I’ll leave it there.
Teenagers gonna teenage.
you leave it where it starts to get interesting. More more! Details, details!
The only South African on UVA’s team is Aimee Canny, right?
They had another one committed…
Yeah they have a 2026 women’s commit who appears to come from the same metro area as Mihaylov (and committed well before him), so it makes sense that he would have given UVA a boost in the recruiting process…and then reconsidered if the relationship fell through.
Still a big blow for UVA, he was their best 2026 recruit. And especially with their record on the men’s side, they’re going to need consistent talent coming in to develop a stronger overall team…if they ever actually do (sighs).
Everything you said are very good points.
That said, the fate of the UVa men is going to be on how well this all-timer of a freshman class performs. If they perform well, DeSorbo and crew won’t have much trouble going out and finding a replacement in the portal. If it doesn’t…
Better hope any lingering negative culture has been sussed out

Fantastic Article Spencer! Such an invigorating read.
I wish I shared your invigoration
Anything is possible, Troyy.
Good decision.
UVA is not known for turning male swimmers into greatness.
It is going to be really, really interesting to see what DeSorbo can get out of Heilman and Williamson.
