Former Artistic Swimmer, Current Aruba Record Holder Avi Tromp Commits to Northern Colorado

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Aruba’s Avi Tromp has announced her commitment to the University of Northern Colorado for the fall of 2025. A senior at EduCampus Aruba and member of Giants Aquatics Aruba, Tromp was an elite artistic swimmer for Aruba for 11 years before switching full-time to competitive swimming in September 2023.

During her artistic swimming career, Tromp represented Aruba at major international events including the Pan American Games in Lima 2019 and Santiago 2023, and earned a medal at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games.

The Jordy Groters-coached athlete holds an impressive total of 11 Aruban national records across long course and short course meters. In long course meters, she owns the records for the 50 and 100 fly events. Her short course meters records include the 50 and 100 breast, 100 fly, 100 and 200 IM, as well as four relay records: the 200 and 400 free relays, and the 200 and 400 medley relays, highlighting her versatility and dominance in Aruban swimming.

Tromp told SwimSwam that Northern Colorado “feels like the perfect place to grow both academically and personally, while advancing my education and athletic career.”

Tromp has seen a huge surge in personal bests since fully committing to swimming full time. Before, she was trying to juggle both at once. See a comparison of just how much time she’s dropped since making the switch just over 2.5 years ago:

Tromp has not had the opportunity to compete much in the yards pool, but has competed at a select yards meets in the U.S. throughout 2024. She hasn’t swum many events, but of the events she has swum, her 100 breast and 100 free are the standouts, where she has clocked marks of 1:02.52 and 51.87, respectively.

Top SCY Times:

  • 50 Free: 23.60
  • 100 Free: 51.87
  • 100 Fly: 56.23
  • 100 Back: 57.72
  • 100 Breast: 1:02.52
  • 200 IM: 2:08.27

Northern Colorado, a Division I mid-major program that competes in the Western Athletic Conference, is currently led by head coach Lisa Ebeling, who took the helm back in August of 2016. The women’s team finished 6th out of nine teams at the WAC Championships this past February.

Based on her current SCY best times, Tromp will likely be most impactful in the 100 breast, where her current best of 1:02.52 would have situated her 3rd on the team’s depth chart last season, and that’s without many racing reps in the short course yards pool under her belt. Freshman Birgitta Ingolfsdottir (1:01.64) and junior Maria Erokhina (1:01.74) led the charge in that event this past season, with those times stemming from the conference ‘A’ final where they posted 4th and 5th place showings. It took 1:02.65 to make the championship heat, so Tromp enters as a top-8 scorer immediately.

Beyond the 100 breast, Tromp would have slotted in at 3rd in the 50 free and 100 fly, with her 50 free best just 0.06 outside of what it took to make the ‘A’ heat at WAC this past season, while ranking 5th in the team’s 100 free rankings. Her 100 fly and 100 free are just off the marks it took to make top 16, but the conference offers ‘C’ finals, so she enters as a multi-event finalist.

The university has not publicized any of their recruits for the rest of the incoming 2025 class.
