It was a record-setting day for Canada’s Para-swimmers Thursday, as Danial Murphy led the way at the Can-Am Para-Swimming Championships in Miami.
The 24-year old from the Sackville (N.S.) Waves Aquatic Team swam the S5 100-m freestyle in 1:28.26, topping his old Canadian record for the second time in a day. Murphy dropped more than three seconds from his previous record.
Murphy also shaved more than a second off his national 50-m butterfly mark, swimming his final in 49.31 after breaking his year-old record in the morning.
“It’s pretty amazing to see what the results are of my swimming and to see how far I’ve come in the last little bit,” Murphy said. “I think the first day has been amazing, to see all the other swimmers and to see how far Canada has come and how great everybody is doing.”
Kirstie Kasko of Calgary’s Cascade Swim Club, meanwhile, broke her national record for the second time in a day in the SB14 100-m breaststroke with a finals time of 1:25.69.
Zach Zona (Norfolk Hammerhead Aquatic Club) smashed his S8 1,500-m freestyle national record with a time of 20:55.41, an improvement of more than 30 seconds for the 15-year-old from Simcoe, Ont.
Maxime Rousselle of Club de natation du Haut-Richelieu (Que.) set a new national mark by the slimmest of margins, swimming the SB14 100-m breaststroke in 1:13.15, 0.01 faster than Michael Heath’s three-year-old mark.
Nathan Stein of the Surrey (B.C.) Knights also had a strong swim Thursday evening. The 21-year-old set a new personal best in the S10 100-m freestyle at 53.39, just 0.17 off Benoit Huot’s Canadian record.
