The Southeastern Meet of Champions had to have been something swim coaches at the University of California loved watching.
That’s because a couple of Cal commits, Baylor Stanton and Albert Smelzer, continued to haul in titles and affirm their status near or on top of the season rankings in certain events.
Stanton, from Gwinnett Aquatics, won six individual events at the meet. He swam a personal best time of 1:35.87 to win the 200 freestyle, and also won the 1000 free (9:06.53), the 100 backstroke (46.70), the 200 back (1:40.66), the 200 individual medley (1:44.14) and the 400 IM (3:44.02).
His time in the 100 back is now the fastest of the season in that event for the 17-year-old boys age group, but it was off his personal best time of 46.57 set back in 2023.
Stanton also owns the fastest time this year in the 400 IM (3:41.50, set in December at the Speedo Winter Junior Championships East) and the second-fastest times in both the 200 back and 200 IM.
Swimming for the Greensboro Swimming Association, Smelzer won five events, setting personal best times in winning the 100 free (43.04) and 100 butterfly (47.68). He also won the 50 free (19.66), the 50 back (22.86) and 50 fly (22.01), and swam personal best times to finish second in the 200 free (1:36.28) and 100 back (48.34).
In addition, Smelzer set a personal best time in the 50 free (19.51) while swimming the first leg of the 200 free relay.
Smelzer now has the second-fastest time in the 50 free in the 17-year-old boys age group this season and the third-fastest in the 100 free.
Smelzer was a big reason why Greensboro Swimming Association won the men’s competition.
In the women’s competition, 14-year-old Heba Fouitah of Aiken-Augusta Swim League showed again why she is an acclaimed swimmer in her age group.
Fouitah swam personal best times to win the 50 free (23.19), 100 free (49.82), the 200 back (1:57.03) and the 200 IM (2:01.11). She also won the 200 free in 1:49.29 and was second in the 100 back in a time of 54.90.
In the 14-year-old age group, Fouitah owns the fourth-fastest time in the 100 free, the 6th-fastest time in both the 200 free and 200 back, the eighth-fastest time in the 200 IM and the 12th fastest time in the 50 free.
Both the women’s and combined team titles were won by the Boiles School Sharks.
Other individual standouts were:
- In the women’s competition, Neala Klein of the Boiles School Sharks won the 500 free (4:53.24), the 1000 free (10:04.32) and 200 fly (personal best time of 2:01.39). Klein is a Class of 2025 swimmer who has signed with Duke.
- Kaidy Stout of the Greensboro Swimming Association also won three events in the women’s competition, taking the 100 breast (personal best time of 1:01.51), the 200 breast (2:10.44) and the 400 IM (personal best time of 4:19.72). In the 15-year-old age group, Stout still owns the fastest time in the 200 breast (2:09.82) set earlier this year at the NC SC Senior Championships. She also has the fifth-fastest time in the 100 breast.
- Finnly Jollands, a Class of 2025 swimmer who swims for the Stingrays and will swim in college at Minnesota won the 50 back (25.95). And 100 back (54.53). She was also second in the 200 back (1:57.23).
- In the men’s competition, Class of 2025 swimmer Cody Miles won five events, winning the 1650 free (15:38.34), 100 breast (56.12) and 200 breast (2:02.31) in personal best times. He also won the 400 free (4:29.75) and 50 breast (26.50), and swam a personal best time in the 200 IM (3:57.16) to finish second.
