Saline had waited both 365 days and 12 years for this moment at the same time.
The Hornets had waited 365 days after finishing second at last year’s Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 state meet to Ann Arbor Pioneer, finishing 30 points out.
“We believed we had the talent to do it,” Saline head coach Todd Brunty said to the MHSAA. But coming into today, we thought we had a chance.”
Fueled by last year’s meet, Saline earned redemption by dethroning four-time champion Pioneer, winning this year’s meet with 291.5 points. Pioneer was second with 263 points.
Division 1 is Michigan’s largest classification in terms of school enrollment.
It was a return to the top for Saline after a lengthy drought since its last state title in 2013.
Leading the way for the Hornets was sophomore Issac Adanin, who swam two personal bests. He won the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:48.24, topping his old best by 1.72 seconds. He later won the 100 breaststroke in 56.23, beating his old best by 64 one-hundredths.
The other individual standout was Novi Detroit Catholic Central sophomore Camren Turowski.
He won the 50 freestyle in a personal best time of 20.41 and then the 100 free in a personal best and school record time of 44.64, capping off a season where he earlier also set an Oakland County meet record in the event.
Northville junior Brady Stenson won the 200 free in a personal best time of 1:38.06 and swam anchor for his school’s winning team in the 400 free relay, which won in a time of 3:06.60.
Ben Hu, Ace Spicer and Jayden Setyabudi were the other team members.
Pioneer won the other two relays.
The team of Cam Kline, Elijah Almeida, Edward Zhang and Henry Baumhover won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:32.66, while the quartet of Zhang, Brighton Han, Charles Knoepp, and Baumhover won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:24.66.
Other individual winners were:
- East Kentwood senior Fidele Byiringiro became the first from his school to win a diving title since 1997, winning with 448.80 points.
- Saline senior Diego Valdes, a Xavier signee, won the 100 butterfly in a time of 49.15. It was a personal best by 82 one-hundredths.
- Zeeland senior and Louisville signee Owen Stevens won the 500 free in a personal best time of 4:23.65, repeating as champion in the event.
