Great individual performances by college-bound upperclassmen and a return to the top for two teams were the themes of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Association 3A state meet on March 14-15.
The Upper Dublin girls team, which finished eight points out of a state title in second last year, won its first championship since being co-champions in 2020. Upper Dublin also was co-champion in 1994 and won titles outright in 1993, 1977, and 1976.
The North Allegheny boys team won its seventh title overall and first since 2019.
GIRLS’ RECAP
Upper Dublin only won one event, and that was courtesy of junior Sophia Sileo-Magliari, who won the 100 breaststroke in a personal-best time of 1:02.04.
But seven second-place finishes and five third-place finishes helped Upper Arlington win relatively easily.
The individual standouts were Hatboro Horsham senior Annie Jia and State College junior Molly Workman.
Signed with California, Jia won the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:58.44 to repeat in that event. She later became a four-time champion in the 100 butterfly, winning a state-record time of 50.65. Jia broke her old record of 51.26 set last year.
Jia also swam leadoff on Hatboro Horsham’s winning teams in the 200 free and 400 free relays, setting a state record in each leadoff leg: 22.23 in the 50 free and 48.27 in the 100 free. Both records were broken in individual events earlier in the meet.
The 200 free relay team won in a time of 1:32.99. Megan Luddecke, Emmy Erikson and Sarah Parker were the other team members.
In the 400 free relay, the same quartet but different order of Jia, Luddecke, Parker and Erikson won in a time of 3:23.29.
Workman, who has committed to Virginia, won the 50 free in a time of 22.44 to repeat in that event. She also repeated in the 100 free with a personal best and state record time of 48.85, breaking the old record of 49.01 set in 2003 by Meaghan Raab of Hershey – though that record was short-lived with Jia breaking it in the relay to end the meet.
Wilson’s team of Olivia Vecchio, Emma Dougherty, Evelyn Quick and Madalee Roberts won the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:41.47.
Other individual standouts were:
- Fox Chapel senior Sarah Pasquella, who has signed with Michigan, won the 200 free in a time of 1:48.84.
- Conestoga senior Avery Hillier won the diving event with 480.35 points, repeating as champion.
- Wissahickon senior Nora Weber, an Auburn signee, repeated as champion in the 500 free in a personal-best time of 4:49.24, topping her previous best by 3.03 seconds.
- Mt. Lebanon senior and Virginia signee Sylvia Roy won the 100 back for the third straight year, doing so in a state-record time of 52.74. Roy broke her own record of 52.90 set last year.

BOYS’ RECAP
The only multiple-event winner was Penncrest senior Jonathan Hoole, an Alabama signee.
Hoole first won the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.12, and then won the 100 free in a personal-best time of 43.66.
Upper Dublin senior Toby Herzog, a William & Mary signee, won the 100 breaststroke in a personal-best time of 53.76 and was also a member of his school’s winning team in the 200 medley relay.
Franco Ciccarone, William Matthews and Brady Manser teamed up with Herzog to win in a time of 1:30.42.
North Allegheny’s team of Grant Regule, Gus Miller, Mason Shantz and Zachary Totin won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:22.50, while North Penn’s squad of Brendan Lao, Ryan O’Donnell, Mason DiMauro and Macek Vandermolen won the 400 free relay in a time of 3:03.66.
Other individual winners were:
- State College senior Sam Huggins, a North Carolina signee, won the 200 free in a personal-best time of 1:36.03 to improve on a third-place finish last year.
- Warwick sophomore Brody Reber captured the 200 IM in a time of 1:48.94, which was a personal best by 2.49.
- Governor Mifflin junior Alex Wodehouse won the diving event with 593.10, taking the title this year after coming in second last year.
- Wilson junior Kai Boyer won the 100 butterfly in 48.33, topping his previous personal best by 44 one-hundredths.
- Pittsburgh Central Catholic senior Mac Clark, who has signed with Tennessee, won the 500 free in a personal-best time of 4:22.78 to improve on a third-place finish in 2024.
- Mars senior Luke Lamb, who will swim for Navy, won the 100 backstroke in a personal-best time of 47.78.
