Bishop Hendricken Boys Repeat As Champions, Barrington Girls Win 11th Straight

One meet came down to the last event, while there wasn’t nearly as much drama in the other at the Rhode Island Interscholastic League state swimming and diving meet on March 2.

The Bishop Hendricken boys won their second straight state title and 36th overall, overtaking second-place South County Co-op with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay.

On the girls’ side, Barrington won their 11th straight championship in convincing fashion.

GIRLS’ RECAP

Barrington not only rolled to its 11th straight title, but was led by two underclassmen to indicate the future is bright also.

Sophomore Molly DiGiacomo and freshmen Grace Lunardelli and Reese Graveline each won an individual event and were a part of two winning relay teams.

DiGiacomo won the 50 freestyle (24.28), Lunardelli won the 100 butterfly (56.35) and Graveline won the 500 freestyle (5:16.55).

DiGiacomo and Lunardelli were part of the 200 medley relay team that won in a state record time of 1:49.23, breaking the record of 1:49.55 set in 2009 by Prout.

Lara Tolley and Ava Webster were the other team members.

Graveline swam anchor for Barrington’s team that won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:41.42.

Raina Salahuddin, Kate McAdams and Grace Fontaine were the other team members.

Graveline (second), DiGiacomo (third) and Graveline (anchor) also were a part of the winning team in the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:36.4.

Molly Hanratty was the other member of that team.

Two individuals won two events apiece. Nkhs Swim Team junior Isabel Bouzaid won the 200 freestyle (1:54.82) and the 100 backstroke (57.92).

Country Day senior Maggie Holland won the 200 IM (2:06.26) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.27) in a time of 1:05.27.

The other individual winner was Providence Country Day sophomore Kate Porter, who won the 100 freestyle in a time of 52.74.

BOYS’ RECAP

Bishop Hendricken only one event, and that was the 400 freestyle relay. But that win was enough to propel it to a championship after it trailed South County Co-op by six points going into that event.

The team of Rocco Czaja, Hunter Andrews, Avery Cover and Tristan Jordan clocked a time of 3:15.29 to win the event. South County Co-op finished sixth, allowing Hendricken to win the meet by eight points.

The 200 medley relay team of Zachary Prouix, Evan Wysor, Ian Sheldon-Scott and William Schatzfrom from Nkhs won that event in a time of 1:38.09.

South County Co-op’s team of Luke Holsted, Will Erautt, Ethan Young and Jackson White won the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:28.75.

The individual standouts were Classicial senior George Groves and Lincoln junior Holden Brown, who each broke two state records.

Groves won the 200 IM in a record-setting time of 1:49.54, breaking the old record of  1:49.54 set in 2016 by Max Miranda. He later won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 54.47, breaking the old record of 55.76 set by Matthew Stanley in 2018.

Brown won the 50 freestyle in a time of 20.65, which broke the old record set in 2023 of 20.82 by Will McClelland. He then won the 100 butterfly in a time of 48.67, breaking the old record of 49.15 set by Harry Homans in 2018.

Another individual won two events, and that was Moses Brown sophomore Fabrizio Petarca. He won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:42.61 and the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:43.76.

The other individual winners also broke records.

Cumberland junior Jarett Zito won the 100 freestyle in a time of 45.90, besting the old record of 46.14 set last year by Zachary Szabo.

Blackstone Valley Prep junior Jackson Chiappetta won the backstroke in a time of 49.35, which broke the old record of 49.74 set by Luca Spinazzola in 2009.
